How can we better understand the intersections of memory, art, and activism? Congratulations to our colleague Rimantė Jaugaitė on her most recent article on the remembrance of the Srebrenica genocide. Link to the OA in the first comment.

MEPOST highlights from the past month:

1️⃣ Fieldwork in Klaipėda, where our Polish-Lithuanian team explored how the city is reshaping the memories of industry from its German and Soviet past(s)
2️⃣Rimantė Jaugaitė and Jogilė Ulinskaitė took part in a tour led by former employees of the Vilkas factory as part of Auksė Petrulienė’s newest exhibition on the industrial heritage of Kaunas.
3️⃣Jogile Ulinskaite and Joanna Wawrzyniak presented MEPOST initial findings at the After Industry conference in Prague.

👉Now we are looking forward to our joint panels with colleagues from Spain and Argentina at the Memory Studies Association conference in Buenos Aires this July, where we will explore similarities and differences in the emotional legacies of industrial transformation across three regional contexts.

Last week, our colleague Zofia Wóycicka visited the Onderduikersmuseum (Nieuwlande, the Netherlands). Although the museum first opened its doors in 2018, its new permanent exhibition was inaugurated in 2023. During her visit, Zofia also met and spoke with members of the museum team.
On her way back, she stopped at the Dutch Resistance Museum in Amsterdam.
This marked the final study trip within the research project led by Zofia and Michalina Musielak on the “Righteous” as an element of transnational memory politics and local visual representations. We will definitely miss their visual reports from the field!

What is industrial heritage in cities like Šiauliai and Panevėžys? What slips from view? On April 17, Rimantė Jaugaitė (CRSM WS UW), Aušra Teleišė, and Jogilė Ulinskaitė (Vilnius University) explored these questions in their presentation “The (In)visible Industrial Heritage of Lithuania’s Industrial Cities.” Drawing on our joint MEPOST project, their talk was part of the 1st Conference of the Lithuanian Anthropological Association, “Contemporary Research by Lithuanian Anthropologists: Current Projects and Future Directions.”

Another (slow) memory studies article for your attention!. This time Marisa Kërbizi (Aleksandër Mosiu University, Albania) and Tomasz Rawski from our Center discuss how post-communist Albanian literature offers an important but often overlooked view of the country’s rapid deindustrialization after 1990. As factories closed, everyday life changed dramatically. Yet most literary attention has focused on the trauma of Hoxha’s regime, leaving these economic transformations in the background. Marisa and Tomasz's paper looks at how recent Albanian poetry and prose (2004–2021) address this gap, especially through themes of broken identities and migration, and shows how the memory of deindustrialization continues to unfold over time.
