In the days 16-18 Sept. our colleague Zofia Wóycicka participated in the conference "Infrastructures of Memory Exhibitions Difficult Pasts Through Art, Museums, and Curatorial Practices" held at the Łódź Universtity. She gave there a presentation titled "Infrastructures of authenticity" prepared on basis of the resaerch she has conducted in the recent years together with Michalina Musielak.

Our PhD candidate, Michalina Ludmiła Musielak, is sending her greetings from Frankfurt, where she is taking part in this year's Mnemonics PhD summer school, organised by the Network for Memory Studies. This year's edition is devoted to ’Memory and the Future’.

We enjoyed a busy and rewarding week at the 10th Annual Memory Studies Association Conference in Buenos Aires, with seven scholars from our Center contributing to the program.

The conference marked the end of Joanna Wawrzyniak's term on the MSA Executive Committee as Past President. During the week, Joanna took part in several events, including the conference opening, the tribute to the late Wulf Kansteiner, and the discussion on the past and future of the MSA.

Dominika Błachnicka-Ciacek spoke about Ukrainian diaspora responses to Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Rimantė Jaugaitė, Krzysztof Florek, and Joanna together with Jogile Ulinskaite and Aušra Teleišė from Vilnius University co-organized a double panel on industrial memories in Eastern Europe, Southern Europe, and Latin America.

Our doctoral researchers showcased their work: Zosia Rohozińska presented her research on the memories of Socialist Realism; Paweł Downarowicz examined the changing role of May Day in the post-socialist transformation of Warsaw and Berlin; and Bartosz Pergół discussed the reinterpretation of artistic heritage in Warsaw.

And we immersed ourselves in the rich cultural program marking the 50th anniversary of the military coup in Argentina. It was an unforgettable week. ¡Muchas gracias, Buenos Aires!

We are very grateful to the Narodowe Centrum Nauki (NCN) and the University of Warsaw Research Excellence Initiative (IDUB UW) for awarding us grants that made our participation in this conference possible.

◽️What are the differences between sociology and ethnography when it comes to looking into post-displacement regions and the life stories of their inhabitants? What we actually do when in the field and how we understand “the field”? These were among questions posed by Agnieszka Nowakowska during a talk between Małgorzata Łukianow and our PI, Karolina Ćwiek-Rogalska. They focused on Małgorzata’s recent book, “Memory in Postmigration Communities: Field of Memory” – a read highly recommended!📖

Conference season in full swing! Rimantė Jaugaitė is taking a well deserved break from research on Polish–Lithuanian industrial memory to present her work on the role of coffee rituals, emotions, and the commemoration of the Srebrenica genocide at the Interdisciplinary Balkan Symposium in Łódź!

MEPOST highlights from the past month:

1️⃣ Fieldwork in Klaipėda, where our Polish-Lithuanian team explored how the city is reshaping the memories of industry from its German and Soviet past(s)
2️⃣Rimantė Jaugaitė and Jogilė Ulinskaitė took part in a tour led by former employees of the Vilkas factory as part of Auksė Petrulienė’s newest exhibition on the industrial heritage of Kaunas.
3️⃣Jogile Ulinskaite and Joanna Wawrzyniak presented MEPOST initial findings at the After Industry conference in Prague.

👉Now we are looking forward to our joint panels with colleagues from Spain and Argentina at the Memory Studies Association conference in Buenos Aires this July, where we will explore similarities and differences in the emotional legacies of industrial transformation across three regional contexts.

Last week, our colleague Zofia Wóycicka visited the Onderduikersmuseum (Nieuwlande, the Netherlands). Although the museum first opened its doors in 2018, its new permanent exhibition was inaugurated in 2023. During her visit, Zofia also met and spoke with members of the museum team.
On her way back, she stopped at the Dutch Resistance Museum in Amsterdam.
This marked the final study trip within the research project led by Zofia and Michalina Musielak on the “Righteous” as an element of transnational memory politics and local visual representations. We will definitely miss their visual reports from the field!
