ENHANCE Thematic Paths 08/06/2026

🌍 Study Urban Planning on a European Campus

Did you know that by joining the MSc specialisation Smart Environmental Planning and Design (SEPD) at Warsaw University of Technology, you become part of the ENHANCE Alliance – one of Europe’s leading alliances of technical universities?

ENHANCE brings together 10 renowned European universities under the vision of One European Campus, offering students access to international learning opportunities, mobility, interdisciplinary collaboration, and shared educational pathways across Europe.

One of these opportunities are the Urban Planning Thematic Paths, which allows students to build a specialised international study profile by combining learning experiences offered by ENHANCE partner universities. Thematic Paths are designed to connect the strengths of different institutions, provide simplified recognition of academic achievements, and create additional opportunities for international projects, summer schools, and master's thesis cooperation.

At SEPD, students learn how to address some of today's most pressing challenges:
🌱 Climate change adaptation and mitigation
🌿 Biodiversity conservation and nature-based solutions
🏙️ Sustainable urban and regional development
📍 Geospatial technologies and spatial analytics
🤝 Participatory governance and smart city planning

Last week, from 26–28 May 2026, representatives of the Alliance met at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) in Valencia to further develop innovative educational pathways and strengthen the vision of a shared European learning environment. Warsaw University of Technology actively contributes to these initiatives, helping shape the future of international engineering and planning education.

🌍 22 May – International Day for Biological Diversity

How can spatial planning help reconnect fragmented ecosystems and protect biodiversity in a rapidly urbanising and climate-changing world?

This question is becoming increasingly important globally — including in the context of the upcoming IPBES assessment report on “the spatial planning and ecological connectivity assessment”, highlighting the critical role of landscape connectivity and spatial governance in biodiversity conservation.

At the Faculty of Geodesy and Cartography, Warsaw University of Technology, students of the English-taught specialisation Smart Environmental Planning and Design in Spatial Planning Program, explore these challenges using advanced geospatial technologies.

During the course Geospatial Technologies for Sustainable Environment, students work on real spatial analyses related to:
🦊 wildlife conservation
🌿 ecological connectivity
🛰 remote sensing and spatial data analysis
🗺 habitat fragmentation and migration corridors
⚙ automated geoprocessing workflows using open-source CASE tools

Using datasets such as Sentinel-2 Global Land Cover and OpenStreetMap, students develop Least Cost Path (LCP) analyses to model probable migration routes for wildlife species and identify ecological corridors essential for maintaining biodiversity connectivity.

The projects combine:
• GIS and spatial analytics
• landscape ecology
• sustainable spatial planning
• biodiversity conservation
• environmental decision support

The final outcome?
Professional analytical maps supporting evidence-based planning for more resilient and connected landscapes.

Because protecting biodiversity also means planning space responsibly.

What if regional planning worked like a strategic simulation game?

In the course Regional Policies and Spatial Planning, students of the MSc in Spatial Planning at Warsaw University of Technology work in teams as regional consulting firms. Their task is to develop spatial and policy strategies responding to real regional challenges.

One of the project themes is:

Metropolitan Nature Network – Integrating green–blue infrastructure into regional planning

Students analyse how green and blue infrastructure can support metropolitan development, improve spatial connectivity, and strengthen the role of nature in regional planning. Their work combines policy analysis, GIS-based spatial diagnosis, scenario building and implementation thinking.

The course uses gamification to support teamwork and engagement. Teams collect Influence Points, complete milestones, earn Policy and GIS Expert Badges and advance through planning ranks while developing their final strategic documents.

Through the project, students prepare:
• regional diagnosis and data inventory
• GIS-based spatial analyses
• spatial scenarios
• policy implementation plan
• risk assessment matrix
• final strategic document and presentation

The course links regional planning with EU policy priorities, SDGs, spatial analysis and professional communication.

How can green infrastructure help cities and landscapes adapt to climate change — and how can neighboring municipalities coordinate their actions for more resilient regional futures?

In the MSc in Spatial Planning at Warsaw University of Technology, students explore these questions in the course:

Green Infrastructure for Resilient Landscapes and Cities

The course is taught by visiting professor Dr. Yaser Abunnasr — Director of the AUB Nature Conservation Center, Chair of the Landscape Architecture Program, and Professor of Landscape Architecture and Planning at the American University of Beirut.

With more than 32 years of academic and professional experience, Dr. Abunnasr specializes in:
• regenerative urban planning and design
• landscape planning
• green infrastructure
• nature-based solutions for climate adaptation
• resilient urban and regional systems

The course familiarizes students with the principles, theories and practical applications of green infrastructure planning, design and policy, with special attention to ecosystem services and climate adaptation in urban and landscape contexts.

Using a case-study approach, students work across scales and disciplines to address real spatial and governance challenges — including the coordination of green infrastructure strategies between neighboring municipalities.

The course combines:
🌿 nature-based solutions
🌍 climate adaptation strategies
🗺 spatial and landscape planning
🏙 urban and regional governance
🤝 intermunicipal cooperation and policy coordination

Students learn how green infrastructure can become a strategic framework connecting ecology, planning and resilient territorial development.
