Welcome back to our 'Meet the Pioneers in the Paediatrics World’ series!

Meet Doctor Michael R.Harrison, often referred to as the ‘Father of Fetal Surgery’. For 20 years, he served as the division chief in Pediatric Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, home to the first established Fetal Treatment centre in the US.

In 1981, Doctor Harrison and his team successfully performed the first open fetal surgery on a fetus who had a congenital hydronephrosis. To correct this, a vesicostomy was performed by placing a catheter in the fetus to allow the urine to flow normally. The blockage itself was removed surgically after birth. This centre also conducted the first resection of a fetal sacrococcygeal teratoma.

In addition to having published nearly 400 peer-reviewed articles and Chair of the American Pediatric Surgical Association’s Committee on Fetal Therapy, he also published the first comprehensive textbook, The Unborn Patient : Prenatal Diagnosis & Treatment. Among the many innovations discovered, his team has developed a uterine stapling device and radiotelemitters to monitor fetal conditions during surgery.

Have a lovely day & stay tuned for the next one 🤩

Hello everyone! 😊
We are starting a short series of ‘Meet the Pioneers in the Paediatrics World’, where we will be shining light on the many doctors who have contributed to the groundbreaking innovations in this field.

Meet Doctor Redmond Burke! He’s a congenital heart surgeon and the founder of The Congenital Heart Institute at Miami Children's Hospital. He began performing a series of surgical firsts, in 1993 starting with first minimally invasive repair of patent ductus arteriosus in the US, world’s first video-assisted thoracoscopic vascular ring division and world's first thoracic duct ligation in 1994. Doctor Redmond’s vision and goal among many others is to reduce the therapeutic and surgical trauma that patients have to endure throughout their lifetime.
