Last Humpday's picture shows a meat grinder.

A meat grinder is primarily known as a meat mincer (or just mincer) outside of North America.

Terms and Regional Usage

Meat Mincer / Mincer:
This is the most common alternative term. It is predominantly used in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Meat Grinder: This term is standard in the United States and Canada. It is also the term generally used by manufacturers for industrial-scale processing.

Meat Chopper / Chopper:
Used globally to describe either traditional handheld blades or manual-crank devices that finely chop meat.

Variations by Appliance

Sausage Maker / Sausage Machine:
Sometimes used to describe the appliance, as grinding meat is the primary step in sausage making and many grinders come with sausage-stuffing attachments.

Food Processor / Vegetable Mill:
While technically distinct from dedicated meat-grinding screws, these terms are often used interchangeably by home cooks when referring to general kitchen shredding and processing.

Buffalo Chopper:
A commercial bowl-style food cutter and mincer commonly used in high-volume American kitchens.

Finder du en svækket fugl og vil give den vand – stop.

Fugle har deres luftvejsåbning, kaldet glottis, placeret fremme i bunden af munden.

Det er det lille hul, du kan se på billedet. Drypper du vand direkte ind i næbbet, risikerer det at løbe ned i luftrøret i stedet for maven – og fuglen kan drukne på land.

Den rigtige fremgangsmåde: læg fuglen i en mørk papkasse med lufthuller og stil en lille, flad skål vand ved siden af den, så den selv kan drikke, hvis den har kræfter. Eller ring til Dyrenes Vagtcentral.

Velmenende hjælp kan gøre skade. Det er værd at vide.

Under den store depression havde mange amerikanske familier ikke råd til tøj. Mødre begyndte at sprætte de tomme bomuldssække fra mel og sukker op og sy dem om til børnetøj.

Da melfirmaerne opdagede det, traf de en bemærkelsesværdig beslutning. I stedet for råhvide sække med store fabrikslogoer begyndte de at trykke blomstermønstre og figurer direkte på stoffet. Logoerne blev trykt med blæk, der forsvandt ved første vask.

Det var ikke filantropi for syns skyld. Det var en konkret beslutning om at give familier, der ikke havde noget valg, lidt værdighed.

Børnene gik i mønstret tøj. Ingen kunne se, hvad det engang havde indeholdt.

Some English words are often confused, e.g. 'bail' and 'bale'.

So - what's the difference?

While "bail" and "bale" sound exactly the same (homophones), their meanings are entirely different. Bail relates to legal release, scooping water, or leaving a situation. Bale refers to a large, tightly bound bundle (usually of hay or cotton).

Diving Deeper:
How to Use Each
1. Bail
Legal Context: "The judge set her bail at $10,000."
Assistance (Phrasal Verb):
"My friend helped bail me out of a tough financial situation."
Slang (Abandoning):
"We had to bail on the meeting because of the storm."
2. Bale
Agricultural Context:
"The farmer left the bale of hay in the field to dry."
Industrial Context:
"Recycling centers usually compress and bale cardboard boxes for transport."

A Note on Regional Exceptions
If you are reading British English, you might occasionally see "bale" used for the phrases "bale out" (escaping a sinking boat or a crashing airplane), though "bail out" remains the universally preferred spelling in American English.

Other words that are often confused are 'reign' and 'rein'.
