There are conferences you come back from with a notebook full of information. There are those you come back from full of inspiration. And then there are those you come back from with your head full of ideas and one thought: “I want to do something with this!” 🌊

CommOcean 2026 in Bergen was definitely one of the latter. Three intense days surrounded by people who share the belief that how we talk about the ocean really matters. Scientists. Researchers. Educators. Science communicators. Artists. Storytellers.

Different experiences, different perspectives and different ways of working, but one shared passion THE OCEAN. 🌊

And there was something else that made this conference especially special for me meeting old friends again. 💙

And I think this is what I like most about CommOCEAN: its openness to experimenting with new ways of communicating science.

Because ocean communication cannot be limited to scientific papers, presentations, graphs, figures and statistics.

We need stories, emotions, art, conversation and experience. Sometimes, we also simply need to… stop and listen to the sea.

I’m leaving Bergen with my head full of inspiration and an even stronger belief that:
Ocean communication should not only inform.
It should make us care about the ocean.

Thank you CommOcean for creating such a unique space where science, communication, creativity and people could come together.

And thank you to everyone I met in Bergen for the conversations, inspiration, ideas, questions, laughter and that incredible ocean energy. 🌊

See you at the next edition in 2028!

What if we stopped talking about the ocean… and simply experienced it? 🌊
On 3 September, during the CommOcean EMB 2026 conference in Bergen, Norway, together with Ula Zerek from Nature of Us, we had the pleasure of facilitating a workshop that is particularly close to our hearts: “Sense the Sea: Multi-Sensory Maritime Communication Workshop.”
We wanted to try something different.
Because when we communicate about the ocean, we often rely on facts, figures, graphs and scientific data. But the ocean is so much more than data.
So we asked ourselves:
What happens when we invite people to experience the sea with their whole bodies?
🌊 To see it from a different perspective.
🌊 To smell its scent.
🌊 To listen to its sounds.
🌊 To taste water from different seas.
🌊 To feel water through touch and movement.
One of the most special elements of the workshop was our “water bar”, where participants could taste water from different seas and discover how salinity and water composition influence its taste.
But we also created space for something that is often missing from science communication: slowing down, listening, moving and simply being present with water.
And perhaps that is what stayed with us most after the workshop.
Ocean communication is not only about knowing more about the ocean.
It is also about feeling that we are connected to it.
Because sometimes, before we can care, we first need to feel a connection.
And sometimes, before we can truly understand the sea, we simply need to… feel it. 💙
Thank you to everyone who joined us with such openness, curiosity and willingness to discover the ocean from a different perspective.
Sense the Sea – experience the ocean, don’t just talk about it. 🌊

The workshop was held as part of YOLA (Youth Ocean Leadership and Advocacy) – an initiative supporting young people aged 18–30 in their efforts related to ocean conservation and climate policy. YOLA is co-funded by the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme.

Today we have great news, together with Ula Zerek from Nature of Us, to join us for our workshop at the CommOcean Conference in Bergen!

SENSE THE SEA – experience the sea with all your senses! 🌊
Can you hear the sea, smell it, touch it, and even… taste it?
During our workshop, “Sense the Sea: Multi-Sensory Maritime Communication Workshop,” we invite participants to experience the ocean in a completely different way.

Every day, we talk about the sea through numbers, graphs and facts. Or we simply associate it with holidays, beaches and relaxation. But the sea is much closer to us than that – our lives and our bodies are deeply connected to it.

That is why, during the workshop, we won’t just talk about the sea – we will experience it.
Because Ocean Literacy is not only about knowledge of the ocean.

It is also about awareness, emotions, experience, and the feeling that the sea is a part of our everyday lives.
Sense the Sea is an invitation to pause for a moment, step outside our usual ways of thinking and… feel the sea.

Today we have something special for you. 🌊

Together with Ula Zerek from polka dot and Karolina Mielczarek from Storytelling in movement, we invite you to watch a unique film that explores how dance, storytelling, and beauty can deepen our understanding of the world and our connection to the sea.

Inspired by the natural rhythms of the seashore and personal stories of living by the sea, this wordless story shows how movement can express emotions, experiences, concerns, and insights that scientific data alone cannot fully convey.

Movement is a language shared by all living beings—from the tides shaping our coastlines to the rhythms sustaining human life. Through dance, we discover the connections that unite people, nature, and the ocean.

🎥 Watch the film and join us on this journey of discovery.

Choreography & Dance: Karolina Mielczarek
Voice: Kasper Zieliński
Video: Emil Neumann
Video Supervision: Izabela Kotyńska-Zielińska & Ula Zerek
