The answer to yesterday's quiz was (c) by far the fastest. Did you get it right? We use 'by far', 'clearly' or 'easily' to make a superlative like this stronger, to show that there is a big difference between the person or thing that is fastest/biggest/oldest and the person or thing that is next fastest etc. Expressions like 'among' or 'one of' have the opposite effect and show that, for example, there are other swimmers who are equally fast. We need to use plural nouns with these, such as 'one of the fastest swimmers'.
