Have you ever heard about a man named Bob Thomas and his programme - Creeper? Thomas designed it to move across networks and leave a trace wherever it went 👣
Ray Tomlinson, an american programmer from MIT, liked the idea and after some adjustments, he made it self-replicating. Thus, the very first computer worm was born. As a means to stop the virus, Tomlinson wrote a programme called Reaper, which would chase Creeper and delete it. Reaper is the ancestor of contemporary antivirus software.

It’s time to get acquainted with the main topic of our Summer ELSA Law School: cybersecurity! 📱👮‍♂️

Cybersecurity (computer security or information technology security) is a practice of protecting systems, networks, servers and programs from malicious attacks 🛡 These cyber attacks are usually aimed at accessing, changing, or destroying sensitive information. Data theft, disruption of online services or software damage are only a few examples of such attacks. They can extort money from users or interrupt normal business processes.

Implementing effective cybersecurity measures is particularly challenging today due to the variety of devices we use on the daily basis - computers, smartphones smartwatches, just to name a few. Attackers are becoming more and more innovative 📱💻 ⌚️

The global cyber threat continues to evolve at a rapid pace, with a rising number of data breaches every year. A report by Risk Based Security revealed that a shocking 7.9 billion records have been exposed by data breaches in the first nine months of 2019 alone. This figure is more than double (112%) the number of records exposed in the same period in 2018 📈

A strong cyber security system has multiple layers of protection spread across computers, devices, networks and programs. But a strong cyber security system does not solely rely on cyber defense technology - it also relies on people making smart cyber defense choices 🤓 That’s why it is important to know how to help defend yourself against cyber threats, and how to recognize and avoid threats before they infiltrate your network or devices.

What to expect from Summer ELSA Law School Poznan on Security in Cyberspace? 📱👮‍♂️

We will kick things off with an International Conference “Digital footprint: violation of privacy or future opportunity?” 👣 during which experienced speakers will tackle such subjects as social media law, artificial intelligence and intellectual property among others. We will ponder over the influence of our digital shadow on influencers’ wealth as well as unpermitted usage of the pictures we post online.

Security in Cyberspace is a wide topic, which covers hundreds of different subjects. In the course of the week-long event we will touch on several of these during workshops and a negotiation competition🏆 If you apply for our Summer ELSA Law School you will learn about information security - not only about GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), but also cloud computing and its dangers. Academic program will not omit such important issues as cyber threats - cybercrimes, cyber-attacks and cyberterrorism as well as means of protection against them. The topics awaiting you in Poznan also include blockchain technology, smart contracts and digital marketing! It's time to broaden your legal horizons! ☀️

Have you taken part in the previous editions of our Summer Elsa Law School? 🤔 We’re very enthusiastic preparing this amazing project for the 7th time this year. We hope you’re as excited for August as we are, because it’s going to be a beautiful summer journey! 🏜 Last year we spent great time during the opening International Conference "The Right to Private Life in the Cyber Era" as well as during workshops, which included topics like human rights considerations in cyber-investigations, digital courts and AI amidst all others 🔥 We can’t wait to show you what’s waiting for you this year! We also spent remarkable moments during our cultural programme, visiting historic sites, tasting delicious, local dishes and taking part in a multicultural exchange with the participants 👩‍🦳👨‍🦱 We hope that this year’s edition will be as wonderful, if not better than the previous one.
