Arianna Visconti (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, Milano) THE CASE OF THE ATHLETE OF LYSIPPOS (GETTY BRONZE) AND THE STRIFE FOR ITS RECOVERY. COMBATING ILLICIT TRAFFICKING IN ANTIQUITIES: NEW CHALLENGES AND LEGAL DEVELOPMENTS

Spotkanie poświęcone będzie aktualnym wyzwaniom związanym z prawną ochroną dziedzictwa archeologicznego przed nielegalnymi wykopaliskami, przemytem oraz przestępczością zorganizowaną. Punktem wyjścia rozważań będzie głośna sprawa posągu Atlety dłuta Lizypa, niezgodnie z prawem wywiezionego z Włoch, a obecnie stanowiącego jedno z arcydzieł Muzeum J. Paula Getty’ego w Los Angeles. Prof. Arianna Visconti, wybitna badaczka prawa ochrony dziedzictwa kulturowego, przedstawi nie tylko prawną batalię o odzyskanie tego skarbu sztuki starożytnej, ale także omówi najważniejsze współczesne wyzwania związane z ochroną zabytków archeologicznych. Po wykładzie przewidziana jest dyskusja. Spotkanie odbędzie się w języku angielskim.

The meeting will address current challenges in the legal protection of archaeological heritage, including illegal excavations, smuggling and organised crime. The starting point for the discussion will be the high-profile case of the statue of the Athlete by Lysippos, which was illicitly removed from Italy and is now one of the masterpieces of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Professor Arianna Visconti, a renowned researcher in cultural heritage law, will present the legal battle for the restitution of this ancient statue and outline key challenges in the protection of archaeological monuments today. A Q&A session will follow. The working language of the meeting will be English.
