I had the opportunity to take part in a PhD mobility at the University of Padua, one of the oldest universities in Europe and one of the best in Italy. During my stay, I combined research, international collaboration, and personal growth. This experience not only deepened my academic expertise but also opened doors to conduct research, publish my work, and present it at one of the world’s top AI scientific conferences. Beyond academia, it was also a lot of fun exploring Padua, Venice, and other beautiful places in Italy - an unforgettable cultural and personal adventure. Mobility has shown me how valuable it is to connect across borders, exchange ideas, and grow as both a researcher and a person.

The perfect place for Erasmus doesn't exist... or does it?!
Gran Canaria is not just about beaches, surfing, and diving - it's also about an incredible culture and a way of life that embraces slowing down and truly enjoying every little moment. I'm incredibly grateful for every experience, the amazing people around me, and all the unforgettable adventures - whether it's submarine experience or paragliding over the picturesque Las Palmas ❤️🇮🇨🌴

During the summer semester, I had the opportunity to study at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa in the Computer Science Department. Academically, the courses I attended provided both new perspectives and practical insights, complementing my studies at home. Working with international classmates broadened my approach to problem-solving and collaboration, while also strengthening my communication skills in an academic setting.

Beyond the university, living in Lisbon was an unforgettable experience. The city’s mix of history, culture, and modern energy created the perfect backdrop for my exchange. Exploring Lisbon’s neighborhoods, from the narrow streets of Alfama to the vibrant riverfront, gave me a deeper appreciation of Portuguese culture and daily life. The welcoming atmosphere of both the university and the city made it easy to adapt and feel at home.

Overall, this exchange was not only an important step in my academic development but also a rich cultural and personal journey. It gave me lasting memories, new friendships, and a broader outlook that I will carry with me into my future studies and career.

I got a chance to do an internship through the Erasmus+ mobility programme in Barcelona and all in all I'd recommend anyone who gets such an opportunity to take a leap and stand up to the challenge of living in a foreign country—it will surely pay off. Any internship is valuable when graduating and starting a career, and my case was no exception. It can become the push you need to start off the path and test the waters when you're not sure where to start and what to do—as we all are at some point. It can also help build up a network and get integrated into a new culture much faster. Barcelona welcomed me with a warm smile (and sun), yet it wouldn't be true if I said living here as an expat is easy, so the whole internship experience had a bit of everything in it, both the sweat and the rewards. I was able to explore the city, meet a great number of lovely people from all over the world, travel the country, and learn a new language. Plus, while doing an internship there's always a chance you'll get invited to stay in a company! 10/10

"PJAIT lecturer visits Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria to explore Human Digital Twin collaboration!

Dr. eng. Marek Kulbacki, Chief Technology Officer from PJATK recently participated in a staff mobility program through Erasmus+ at Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) in Spain (December 18-22, 2023). This productive visit focused on exploring potential collaborations in the exciting field of Human Digital Twin (HDT) and Human Motion Analysis and Synthesis.

Dr. Kulbacki met with representatives from ULPGC, including Prof. Carmen Paz Suárez Araujo and her team, to discuss the application of HDT in neurodegenerative and extrapyramidal movement disorders. The discussions highlighted the potential for interdisciplinary collaboration involving patients, physicians, therapists, software/hardware experts to develop solutions for early problem detection, diagnosis, and personalized therapy.

This Erasmus+ mobility not only fostered international connections but also opened doors for future collaboration on AI-powered solutions to improve lives.

"My exchange in Sint Lucas Antwerpen became one of my BA studies’ most exciting and life-changing experiences.
I got to know about school accidentally, during participation in LABO 2021 Summer School in Antwerp. It was vital for me to study in English, as I don’t know any other foreign languages, andI found out that even though they teach in Dutch in Sint Lucas, professors and university staff had no problem switching to English if there was at least one English-speaking student. Also, the reason for choosing Sint Lucas became my BA diploma supervisor Frederik De Blesser. I got to know him during LABO, where I was working on a group project where we used AI, and I got so interested in this topic that I decided to explore it in my own graduation project. Frederik was extremely supportive, patient and helpful throughout the entire time we have been working together. And this applies to everyone whom I met during my exchange. My Erasmus coordinator Laura was also very supportive, and guided me through my exchange, answering any questions I had 24/7. I was surprised by how active she was in bringing exchange students together, organizing lunches for us and inviting us to the cafe for a drink. She helped me a lot not only educationally-vise; when the war started in Ukraine, she was one of the people who was checking on me frequently, constantly reminding me that I can always ask her for help and making this extremely hard time a bit easier.
As for the education process in Sint Lucas, I was very satisfied. When I was applying, I have chosen Graphic Design studio, but my somewhat illustrative portfolio landed me in Illustration Studio instead. At first, I was hesitant as I wasn’t sure that this studio was a good fit for me, but now I can certainly say that it was an amazing experience. My studio teachers - Anna, Ben & Hannelore - were extremely open and communicative and the feedback I received from them was always very insightful and helpful. I feel like my illustration skills got much better and I found another way of working and reflecting through illustration. Besides my main Studio Illustration, I got to be a part of Black US Visual Culture, Feminist Art&Theory, and Editorial Practices courses. All these theoretical courses were extremely interesting, and I felt like this knowledge was exactly what I was missing in my education. Just as my Illustration studio professors, Tunde, Petra and Loraine were open and supportive and it was a great pleasure to be a part of their courses.
The best moment of my exchange was when our entire studio Illustration went for a 3-day trip to the Netherlands. I was hesitant at the beginning, but my teachers convinced me to go and I am so glad that they did. During these 3 days, we were staying by the Netherlands’ seaside, drawing, painting and getting to know each other in an informal setting. It was an amazing experience, and during this trip, I created some of my favorite works to date.
Sint Lucas became I second home for me during this exchange. Even though unfortunately, this time also became one of the most challenging, hard, and dark times in my life because of the war, thanks to the support of my teachers, supervisors, and groupmates I felt less alone and always knew that school got my back. If I could do this again I totally would!"
