The coronavirus pandemic brought great changes in many aspects of our life. We have been forced to adapt to these new life settings. The English Division at MUW rose up to the challenges facing higher education, and especially medical training, by implementing a successful e-learning program. Thanks to the efforts of the English Division’s Dean, Prof. Marek Postuła, MD, students have been able to continue their studies and will be able to finish the academic year.

Admissions to the English Division Medical Program also turned to online testing. Every weekend, high school graduates or students with a higher education can take the required Competency Test online from anywhere in the world.

To register for the Competency Test, candidates must apply online https://recruitment.wum.edu.pl/irk/irk/strony/logowaniekandydat.html

If you know any young person who wants to study medicine, tell them about your Alma Mater and the possibility of applying online NOW! Help them fulfill their dreams like you did.

“At the Medical University of Warsaw, anything is possible. Dream it, believe it, achieve it.” - Rector, Prof. Mirosław Wielgoś (2016-2020)

Dr. Bernadette Lenartowicz, class of 2010

"Born in Toronto and raised around the world, I returned to Toronto in 2000 to study electrical engineering at the University of Toronto. After completing a science degree I intended on going to London to continue studies in physics at Imperial University but was asked to tend to my grandmother in Warsaw. During that time it was brought to my attention I could study medicine in Warsaw, initially weary of the idea I gave it a shot and ended up graduating with an MD in 2010.

During my time at MUW I was a class rep for two years (3rd and 4th year) and I served as the EDSG parliament representative while a friend was president of the PDSG; we tried to unite the English and Polish division by doing joint activities.

Being Polish-Canadian I intended on going back to Canada. When I graduated I felt very passionate about surgery, even landed an interview for a general surgery spot in Canada but finally did not attend it as I had grown so fond of Warsaw. Completing my internship in 2011 in Warsaw I become less convinced of pursuing general surgery and decided to take a year off to contemplate things over. I spent a couple years working in different wards, urology, oncology; the longest post being in an internal medicine/family medicine ward. In the meantime I did my medical licensing for the UK (I was missing the simplicity of the English language) so I could locum. Finally I decided family practice would be best for me therefore I started my specialization in Warsaw. Due to starting a family and often taking unpaid leave to work in Scotland I have extended my residency program; should have finished a couple of years ago!

Currently I am on maternity leave and have been since the pandemic commenced. Once I complete my specialization I plan to reopen a PhD I started years ago and start a private family clinic in Warsaw.

My advice for students is have a plan, study as hard as you can but also take time to appreciate life outside of studying. Keep in mind plans can be dynamic there is nothing wrong with changing your mind and not forcing yourself to continue down a path you are uncertain of. A career in medicine is a lifelong path of studying - study well!"

Are you an alumni and would like to share your story? Please send us a message and we will send you our questionnaire!

First English Division Alumni to share his story: dr. (PhD) Marcin Czarniecki – Class of 2011
Dear Alumni, keep them stories coming!
Please share your career paths with us! https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=168140481310811&id=112486183542908

Happy Saturday everyone! We are excited to introduce our Spotlight on MUW ED Alumni series. We will be profiling various ED alums so you can see examples of what life has in store for you after graduation. Enjoy!

Our first profile is Dr. Marcin Czarniecki,
English Divsion Class of 2011.

Brief background:

After graduating from WUM in 2011, I moved to Malta for the Foundation Programme. Subsequently, I returned to Poland for my residency training in radiology at Brodno. Close to the end of my residency I received a scholarship in Cambridge, UK. Shortly thereafter, I transferred to the National Institutes of Health in the United States to continue my research on prostate cancer imaging. I have now returned to clinical work, and I am completing my recertification in radiology at Georgetown University Hospital.

Stage of medical career:

Fellow in the US, on the specialist register in Poland and United Kingdom.

Plans for the future:

In the short term I plan to finish my specialist board certification in the United States, but I would like to use my international experience in the long term either in the US or Europe.

Impact of the coronavirus pandemic:

Our department has experienced a drastic decrease in studies due to the cancellation of elective surgeries and limiting of outpatient visits. The volume of studies performed is slowly increasing but the team has reorganized to work primarily from home, with a minimum of radiologists in the hospital at once. There haven't been any mandatory redeployments of radiologists to clinical fields to help manage COVID patients as of today, but a call for volunteers has been issued. The coming weeks will likely bring a slow increase in the number of performed scans, as well as a reorganization of imaging units to accommodate for the new normal.

Advice for WUM students:

Wherever you go, you're going to have WUM listed on your CV. Make us proud!

The first UVD robot in Poland will appear in the Central Clinical Hospital UCK MUW on Banacha street in Warsaw.
This is the most innovative technology used to disinfect hospital surfaces- mainly wards, operation blocks and corridors. It is already used in hospitals in China, Italy and the UK.

Its main goal is to sterilize high risk areas without the need of people, thus reducing the spread of the virus. It uses UV rays which destroy the coronavirus structure and limit its spread, without risking the health of the medical staff. Possessing such a machine will facilitate the battle with the continually spreading virus. And as an ultra high tech solution it could be ideal for the current pandemia. The only distributor in Poland is Med&Care.

𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐭 𝐌𝐔𝐖 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐀𝐑𝐒-𝐂𝐨𝐕-𝟐 𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐮𝐬!

Only days after introducing the new UVD robot to sterilize surfaces, the Medical Simulation Center at MUW delivers a new idea on how to contain the spread of SARS-CoV-2 virus in hospitals.
Dr. Marcin Kaczor, an anaesthesiologist and intensive care specialist, as well as, the Project Manager of the Medical Simulation Center at the Medical University of Warsaw (MUW), developed a new protective medical appliance to prevent viral aerosol shedding from patients with SARS-CoV-2 virus and other highly pathogenic human coronaviruses during common medical procedures. The tent like design creates a protection between the healthcare provider and ventilated patient with or suspected of having a coronavirus. According to Dr. Kaczor, the tent like design of the new protective equipment is a simple construction, easy to use, disposable and economical. The prototype is made of a 0.3 mm thick translucent foil. The tent like structure covers the area around the patient's head and has two openings with sleeves with elastic ends. It can be used to perform many common medical procedures, such as intubation and extubation, and securing vent tubing of ventilated patients.
We are proud that such innovative ideas are emerging from MUW in these trying times. The Polish Ministry of Health has already put in an order for the production of 8000 models.

Have you ever seen anything like it? What new inventions are you or your colleagues working on to help fight COVID-19? Please share.

We join the city of Warsaw in thanking our Alumni, who are frontline healthcare workers, amid the COVID -19 disease outbreak. The gigantic mural on Tamka St. in the city center near the Vistula river reads: Not all heroes wear capes. Thank you!
You are our heroes! Stay safe! Stay strong!
