"The Russian-Ukrainian case represents an extreme form of mnemonic anxiety, amounting to the securitization of memory and the clash of antagonistic narratives of the past. Russia's instrumentalization of the shared past resulted in mnemonic conflicts with all immediate neighbors. In the case of Ukraine, the securitization of the collective memory by Russia turned into weaponization and justification of military aggression against the entity, which "does not exist" in Russia's historical outlook. Based on a self-deceptive idea of Ukraine as a part of Russia's historical body, the Russian ruling class wages a "historical war" aimed at the destruction of Ukraine as a "non-historical nation".
