Christian Experience and Paul’s Logic of Solidarity: the Spiral Structure of Romans 5–8 03/04/2022

An absolute must to read in Online First of the Biblical Annals:

Susan Eastman, Christian Experience and Paul’s Logic of Solidarity: the Spiral Structure of Romans 5–8

https://czasopisma.kul.pl/index.php/ba/article/view/13513

Taking Romans 5:1–5 as a blueprint for a trajectory of hope in chapters 5–8, Ihe essay discusses three textual “detours” where Paul interrupts that trajectory: a rhetorical performance of life under sin (7:7–25), a depiction of union with all creation in suffering and hope (8:18–27), and a cry of lament (8:26). These rhetorical interruptions evoke Christian experience in solidarity with all creation - a solidarity that in turn displays Christ’s redemptive participation in the depths of all human dereliction, and thereby evokes hope.

Christian Experience and Paul’s Logic of Solidarity: the Spiral Structure of Romans 5–8 This essay investigates key aspects of the rhetorical structure of Romans 5–8 in relationship to Paul’s depictions of Christian experience. Taking Romans 5:1–5 as a blueprint for a trajectory of hope in chapters 5–8, I discuss three textual “detours” where Paul interrupts that trajectory...

Betwixt and Between: The Letter of James and the Human Condition 03/04/2022

New inspiring and important texts in Online First of The Biblical Annals, the fruit of our International Conference on Biblical Anthropology 2021 organized together with the Pontifical Biblical Commission:

Joel B. Green, Betwixt and Between: The Letter of James and the Human Condition

https://czasopisma.kul.pl/index.php/ba/article/view/13477

James’s letter does not concern itself with the nature of humanity in the abstract. His message regarding the trials of Jewish messianists distributed outside the land of the Jews leads him rather to explore the perplexing paradox of the human predicament—called to faithful life patterns, to love of God and neighbor, on the one hand, overwhelmed by craving and sin, on the other hand. This undergirds a profound analysis of the human condition as well as its remedy in God’s true word.

What hour did Jesus call his apostles, meet the Samaritan woman and was judged by Pilate? How is John reckoning the hours of the day in his Gospel? Find out thanks to the article by Adam Kubis, The Biblical Annals, OnlineFirst.

Roman versus Jewish Reckoning of Hours in the Gospel of John: An Exegetical Misconception That Refuses To Die The article deals with an exegetical misunderstanding revolving around the purported existence of two different ways of reckoning the hours of the day in antiquity, and consequently in the Gospels: an alleged Roman mode (in John’s Gospel) and the Jewish one (in the Synoptics). Among Johannine scho...

We Have Been Visited : Divine Encounter through the Lukan Benedictus (Luke 1:68–79)

We Have Been Visited : Divine Encounter through the Lukan Benedictus (Luke 1:68–79) Recent discussions of the Benedictus have focused on its function in Luke- Acts. However, little if no attention has been given to the persuasive force of the passage and how it may have functioned to create a divine encounter for the implied audience. This study will address this gap. Following a b...
