Tuners say 5-10% AirDesire for Stage 1. Thomas says 2-3% max — and here's why.
One of the questions from our first live Q&A in Tuners Guild — Marek asked about EDC17C74 AirDesire scaling for Stage 1. He'd seen "5-10%" in tuning communities and wanted to know where 3.5% fits.
The trap: that 5-10% range is a Euro 5 habit. Euro 6 changes the math. EDC17C74 already runs 19:1 AFR at critical load by emissions design. Even if you add 21% fuel, the mixture stays at 16.5:1 — comfortably lean. The air headroom you think you have isn't there.
Push AirDesire (DAMOS folder AirCtl_DesValCalc, base map AirCtl_mDesBas) past 2-3% and combustion efficiency starts dropping — you lose power, not gain it.
Full breakdown with the AFR math, the Euro 5 → Euro 6 baseline shift, and the symbolic-edit rule:

Driver wish isn't the map that killed your start. The 8-bit shadow next to it is.
Quick one from our first live Q&A — Dmitri made minimal changes to driver wish on an EDC17C46. Engine wouldn't crank the next time he turned the key.
The trap: many EDC17 variants pair driver wish with a hidden 8-bit monitoring copy in folder MoFDrDem_Co (MoFDrDem_rTrqEng), saturated at 255 on purpose. At key-on the ECU cross-checks both. If the delta exceeds the safety threshold (Thomas's rule: keep it under 10%, 5–7% is the zone), a torque monitoring error fires before crank — and that's what gates ignition.
And there's a second layer in MoFLos_Co (16-bit trqEngLos + 8-bit rTrqEngLos) that bites differently — limp mode while you drive, not no-start.
Both layers vary bin-to-bin. No fixed recipe. Survey first, scale together.
Full breakdown with WinOLS screenshots, the saturated-255 pattern explained, and the fix workflow:
