Feelings!
In childhood they are SO BIG (I remember) that on the way to adulthood many of us learn to shut them down, ignore them and hope they never escape from the 'back room' where we shove them. But they don't go away. One of the bravest things we can do as parents and teachers is be prepared to notice our feelings and to breathe while we 'just notice' them. A feeling that is noticed and experienced can leave - and THAT leaves an opening to 'just notice' our children's feelings instead of reacting to them. When we notice our children's feelings, stay present and centred, we can respond to our children in helpful ways. In turn, our children won't have to ignore their feelings, or shut them down, or lock them away 'in the back room'. Get brave!

Light a candle to celebrate the return of the light.
Today is Candlemas, the midpoint of winter, halfway between the shortest day and the spring equinox. At Weleda, we very much see this as another of nature’s ‘tipping points’ when the lengthening days and the gradual increase in the sun’s warmth moves us from the depths of winter to the stirrings of spring.
(Oh, and did you know that another name for snowdrops is 'Candlemas Bells', as they're particularly prevalent at this time of year?)

"What we call play is actually being breathed by the universe."
Joseph Chilton Pearce
Calling all Parents and Teachers - Play is THE way a child's intelligence unfolds. Intelligence is there as potential in every child, that is the nature of being a human-being. And it is the amount of play that works intelligence from 'potential' into reality for each child. But not just any play. The kind of play that unfolds intelligence won't involve a battery or a screen, sorry. It just doesn't do it no matter how much the kids might like it. The kind of play that unfolds intelligence HAS to be in the real world, in three dimensions, with movement, and most often it involves other children and always imagination. Imagination is the genetically encoded process by which the child makes images in his or her brain, and then acts on them. So now you can see why screens won't work, the screen makes it's own image and there is nothing for the brain to do. There is no way intelligence can unfold through the connections the brain builds by making images and connecting them up watching a screen, because there is no brain building going on.
