Gdy jednak...

The first WBN event in 2017 took place in Novotel at Kosciuszki on January 26th with the topic: ‘Business, financial and strategic acumen – career advice you probably didn’t get’. At the beginning of the night the 180+ participants were welcomed by Zuzanna Jawor, the President of WBN. Zuzanna introduced the speakers - Aneta Pilch Head of Project Consulting & Business Intelligence at UBS and Kevin Welch, Managing Director at BBH.
Firstly, the participants watched the TED talk by Susan Colantuono ‘Career Advice You Didn’t Get’. (link: goo.gl/zH8IYP)
After watching the video only four people among whole audience admitted that they have received advice focused on business, financial and strategic acumen when building up their careers.
The panel discussion was started by Aneta Pilch who referred to her personal and professional experiences. Aneta explained how she applied strategy and the balanced scorecard as well as analyzing your company’s financials in order to enable acquiring business, strategic and financial acumen. Aneta also pointed out that the strategy can be applied not only in professional life but can be extended to a personal level, for example, having children working towards set goals whilst pursuing their ambitions like playing football.
Kevin Welch emphasized the importance of business, strategic and financial acumen by referring to early stages of his career. At the beginning of his career Kevin focused on being a subject matter expert and being proficient in his field of responsibilities. He got promoted and kept his focus, this time on developing his soft skill set and developing his team members. After that his career has stopped – why? He has had deep knowledge in subject but was lacking something. He identified the gap and focused on building up the financial, strategic and business acumen to enable move to the next level of his career path.
Following the guest speakers Zuzanna used an example from her professional experience - how understanding the business industry one works in should be analyzed and understood in order to work efficiently and make sound business decisions. Zuzanna also pointed out how we tend to focus on soft skills related to our development rather than linking our professional purposefulness with the employer’s strategy and financial and business aspects. Professionals should keep this in mind and put more focus on the latter.
The questions and answers part of the event led to an engaging discussion and sharing of experiences and views, and some lucky people that asked questions were awarded books funded by the writer and participant of the evening, Sylwia Królikowska, who is a psychologist, coach and trainer.
The networking part was focused on informal discussions in the hall over drinks and nibbles with the focus on the main subject of the evening.

The Krakow Women's Business Network and BBH are pleased to invite you to the next great event "The career advice you probably didn't get”.
Statistics show that only some high potential employees make it to the next level in their career. To be seen as a leader within your organisation and to progress to management roles requires a wide array of skills and competencies. However, there is one skill rarely discussed and less obviously demonstrated by women, but which is critical to drive a company forward and is therefore a key competency of a leader. This skill can be summarised as business, strategic and financial acumen. We will discuss what this means and provide practical advice on how you can obtain this competency through the experiences of leaders

On Tuesday, 6 December 2016, Saint Nicolas Day, the Women's Business Network and State Street Bank Polska, our main sponsor for this event, hosted our traditional Christmas Jingle and Mingle. This time the celebration was held in Pauza in the fabulous Malopolski Garden of Arts.
Zuzanna Jawor, the president of WBN, opened the event and welcomed the participants. Mark Hamilton, Branch Manager highlighted the importance of diversity in contemporary business and encouraged everyone to use the evening as an opportunity for networking. Subsequently, Gregory Apostolakis, Centre Director of HSBC, an active supporter of WBN, wished us all an enjoyable evening.
The first part of the night was focused on networking; we gathered around the tables over a glass of mulled wine and gingerbread and had an opportunity to make new contacts and renew existing ones. We then moved onto the lottery. People were surprised and overwhelmed by the amount of items to win, and we are grateful to our sponsors for their generosity (Studio Synergy, Akademia Stylizacji M.P. Babicz, Gabinet Kosmetyczny Eliksirem, Electrolux, Estetica, Nago Sushi, Dorota Ptak, Sylwia Czajka-Jansen, Sylwia Krolikowska-Evenhuist, Beata Jurasz). Among the items were books, blenders, sports training sessions with a coach, visits to a hairdresser, beauty shop and many others.
The event turned out to be a great success with a lot of positive feedback received during and after the evening.

Both personal life and career are the paths which you can create. Very often our professional development is the result of coincidence or temporary needs rather than a path consciously built based on our abilities. It is never too late to find something in your job that specifically reflects your talents and passions, and to build on them. Horizontal changes of position from one department to another are more and more popular.

After that, Lesley Everett speaker on personal branding and growth presented techniques and shared her thought on importance of self presentation, appearance and reputation. Lesley’s Walking TALL approach includes seven points of maximizing personal brand and contains worth remembering action points: be who you really are, make impact right from the outset, remember that visual brand counts, be memorable and visible, presentational brand matters, creating personal brand statement. What is more, to succeed in building personal brand requires continuously applying those rules. Truly, the presentation was inspiring to the listeners and tips shared by Lesley were practical and helpful.
