Materials and Surface Chemistry Group

Materials and Surface Chemistry Group Wydział Chemii Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego More details about the specific activity can be found under “Research”.

The main goal of the research carried out in „Materials and Surface Chemistry Group” is to gain an understanding of the processes taking place at the solid/gas interfaces and its application for the design of the surfaces with desired properties. The group conducts research on the preparation of new solid materials, modifications of their surfaces, and the study of their reactivity (adsorption/desorption of reactants, catalytic screening). The motivation of the research is both fundamental (interaction of small molecules with model surfaces, modification of surface electronic properties by alkali doping) and applied (characterization of real catalyst surfaces, patents of the new catalytic materials, and engineering of metal implant surfaces).

Congratulations to Agnieszka Wakoń on defending her bachelor’s thesis “Post-synthetic oxidative plasma activation of model transition metal/carbon electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction”

and to Kornelia Drozd on her thesis “Synthesis of 3DOM-structured oxide materials for catalytic application.”

Well done—we are very proud of you and wish you all the best in your next steps! 👏🧑‍🎓🎉

From 26 May to 7 June, members of our group, Prof. Andrzej Kotarba and Dr Gabriela Jajko-Liberka, visited China for a two-stage scientific trip 🏯
The first part took place at Shenyang Normal University, where, at the invitation of Prof. Zhen Zhao, they delivered invited lectures and engaged in fruitful scientific discussions. During the visit, they also had the opportunity to tour the R&D Centre of Catalysis Technology, where Prof. Zhao's ideas are tested on an industrial scale.
The second stage brought them to Chengdu for ICASS 2026 – the 7th International Conference on Applied Surface Science, where both presented their work and exchanged ideas with colleagues from around the world.
The visit strengthened international collaborations and opened new opportunities for future research. And, of course, no trip to Chengdu would be complete without a reminder that this is the home of the world-famous giant pandas! 🐼

A lot has been happening in our group lately! We are excited to share highlights from the 17th International Scientific Conference “Horizons of Science” held in Kraków (May 29–30, 2026). Our students were actively involved, presenting five posters (Jakub Nowak, Piotr Mróz, Szymon Jaśniewski, Mariia Bordulenko, and Agnieszka Wakoń) and one oral presentation delivered by Kornelia Drozd 🎓
Congratulations to all participants! Events like this are a great opportunity for our younger group members to gain experience, share their research, and grow within the scientific community 🌱

We are happy to share that on April 23–26, 2026, members of our group participated in the 8th Anatolian School of Catalysis (ASC-8) in Turkey!
Prof. Andrzej Kotarba delivered an invited lecture, while PhD students, Andrzej Wójtowicz and Karolina Zając, presented their work in pitch talks and posters – both receiving distinctions and awards for their contributions 👏
We are also proud to highlight that the topic of Karolina's presentation has recently been published in ChemNanoMat: https://aces.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/cnma.70295
Congratulations to all!
