Did you know that THE has two pronunciations?

It’s pronounced /ðə/ before a consonant sound — like the book, the car, the teacher.

It’s pronounced /ðiː/ before a vowel sound — like the apple, the orange, the hour.

The important thing? It depends on the sound, not the spelling. For example, we say the university (/ðə/) because it starts with a “y” sound, but the hour (/ðiː/) because it starts with a vowel sound.

It’s an informal expression we use when we feel we failed or didn’t perform as well as we could.
