Smaller classes are often described as one of the advantages of international education.
Their value, however, does not come from size alone.
A smaller group creates conditions in which teachers can observe students more closely, provide specific feedback and adjust the level of challenge. It gives students more opportunities to contribute, explain their reasoning and ask questions.
It also makes it more difficult for a student to become anonymous within the classroom.
At British International School of Cracow, personalised learning does not mean reducing expectations. It means understanding what will enable each student to meet ambitious expectations.
For one student, this may involve additional structure. For another, greater challenge. For another, encouragement to speak, take risks and become more independent.
The strength of a small class lies in the quality of the interactions it makes possible.
