We are coming back to our activities in Nomos, with hopefully an eventful academic year ahead of us.

As an opening, we'd like to invite you to our Nomos Inaugural Lecture on Thursday, 17 September, at 18.00 CEST. Prof. Ninon Grangé will deliver her talk entitled The state of exception and the "as if" operation: a philosophical perspective. Since the exception will also be the theme of our annual conference in Ghent (in late spring 2027), this year we're returning to one of our key topics, which ominously grows in relevance in our times.

NOMOS Annual Conference 202
Kraków | 12–13 June 2026

The Nomos Centre for International Research on Law, Culture and Power invites scholars and researchers to submit paper proposals for its 5th Annual Conference, to be held in Kraków on 12–13 June 2026.

In our current historical conjuncture, crisis and uncertainty have become the very conditions under which thought operates. The erosion of seemingly stable structures produces a sense of urgency that narrows our temporal and political horizons. At the same time, theoretical work is increasingly challenged by the proliferation of AI technologies and an excess of theoretical minutiae, complicating the task of re-orienting theory toward meaningful intervention in unfolding historical processes.

Against this backdrop, the conference invites interdisciplinary reflection on the role, function, and impact of theory today, with a particular emphasis on legal and critical thought. We welcome contributions from a wide range of disciplines that engage with questions such as:

🔹 Theory and critical legal thinking
🔹 Postmodernity and Beyond
🔹 Uses and misuses of theory
🔹 The position of theory within academia
