The Jagiellonian University Institute for the Study of Religions and the SOAS Centre of Yoga Studies invite you to attend the international academic conference: Yoga darśana, yoga sādhana: m**hods, migrations, mediations in Kraków from 18th-21st May 2022.

The YDYS conference is aimed at reviewing and discussing recent developments in the field of Yoga Studies. It follows on from the successful 2016 conference.

During the last five years we have witnessed an increasing amount of state-of-the-art research on yoga, employing m**hods from humanities, social sciences, and beyond. The application of new theories and m**hods to the study of yoga has been accompanied by the emergence of new research areas. Emerging areas of interest include explorations of the sociopolitical entanglements of yoga, social dynamics of yoga communities, local (especially non-anglophone) transformations of yoga, and technologies mediating the transmission of yoga.

We believe it is time once again to come together as an international community of academics to continue interdisciplinary dialogue on yoga in all of its manifestations. Together we will discuss the m**hods applied in yoga studies, the pathways of yoga’s migration across the globe, the social and technological factors mediating its transnational flow, as well as yoga’s role as a mediator in social relations and social change.

We plan to meet once again in the very centre of Kraków to share our research during face-to-face interactions. Although this is primarily an in person event, we would like to make the conference as accessible as possible to those who are not able to attend in person and will be providing the option to present and attend online.

Dates: 18th-21st May 2022 in Krakow, Poland and online.

We'd love you to join us as we push the boundaries on the conversations on yoga. Once the deadline passes, registration is closed and there won't be any further opportunities to register to attend the conference either in person or online.

The YDYS 2022 conference follows from the success of the 2016 conference and we will once again be bringing together the top yoga studies academics in the field.

If you're an MA or under graduate student, work in another academic field, or are a yoga teacher who is interested in the academic study of yoga, we would love for you to join us at the conference.

We are bringing together leading academics in the field of Yoga Studies for a four day conference both in-person, in Karkow, Poland, and online. In the last five years we have seen a boom in yoga research in the humanities and social sciences – the conference will reflect this innovation. Presenters will speak on topics as wide ranging as yoga and anthropology, bhakti yoga, classical yoga, transmissions of modern yoga in non-Anglophone nations, yoga and power relations, abuse in yoga, yoga origins, philosophy, yoga and Buddhism, yoga in contemporary Britain, OM and sound in yoga, yoga, women and gender, and more.

We also have four international keynote speakers – Amanda Lucia, Meera Nanda, Shameem Black and Swami Medhananda.
Attendees can opt to attend either online or in-person. We have a limited number of in-person spaces so do book now if you’re keen to attend. Registration ends on 30th April.
