in case of = in the event of /in the case of = in this specific case

Explanation:
In case of...

Is synonymous with 'in the event of' e.g.

in case of fire (in the event of fire) please leave the building

i.e. If there is a fire, in all cases, please leave the building.

In the case of...

Is used when specifying a particular case. You could be discussing several different cases/situations and want to identify just one and differentiate it from all others.

e.g. In the case of a person suffering severe burns, you should do ###. In the case of someone drowning, you should ###.

Uwaga na liczbę mnogą rzeczowników 'fish' i 'fruit'.
'Fish' najczęściej także w liczbie mnogiej ma formę 'fish' (bez -s), czyli np.:
'I went fishing and caught 17 fish'.
'Fishes' jest rzadko używane i najczęściej tylko do oznaczenia kilku różnych gatunków, np.: 'Several fishes have become extinct.'
Z kolei 'fruit' najczęściej w codziennym angielskim używany jest jako rzeczownik niepoliczalny, a więc nie posiadający liczby mnogiej, np.: 'He eats a lot of fruit' - chociaż użycie go jako rzeczownika policzalnego ('I eat 3 fruits every day') nie jest błędem, ale brzmi trochę dziwnie.
