We are excited to share the latest paper from our collaborators in the Czech Republic, with our team as co-authors, published in Epilepsia. The study reports the fastest oscillations ever recorded in the human brain — ultra-fast activity in the range of 2,000 to 8,000 cycles per second — linked to the pathophysiology of epilepsy.
These signals can only be detected with microelectrodes, and only in a small number of patients, where we were able to target the local neuronal networks generating these seizure-related activities. This large collaborative study brings together recordings from Czech, Polish, French, and American patients using hybrid electrodes that combine standard macro-contacts with special research micro-contacts on the same probes.
This is a seminal contribution not only for epilepsy research, but also for our broader understanding of human brain physiology. Many important questions remain open — including how these ultra-fast oscillations are generated, how they may influence memory and cognition, and whether they may also occur in healthy individuals.
