Ktora jest godzina? ⏰
⠀
There are two ways to answer this question 👇🏼
⠀
✅ METHOD 1: official (just numbers are spoken; most often used when announcing a schedule, for example, at a train station)
⠀
🔹16.30 – szesnasta trzydzieści
⠀
✅ METHOD 2: informal (various constructions are used; used in ordinary conversations)
⠀
🔹16.30 – wpół do piątej
⠀
There are 4 designs in total, with the help of which we can tell how much time. They depend on the position of the minute hand on the dial 🕦
⠀
1️⃣ If now there is an even number of hours, without minutes, i.e. the minute hand is at zero, (for example 14.00) then we say “druga“. Attention to the ending -a, it is supposed to be “godzina druga“, only the word “godzina” may not be used.
⠀
Also note that in the informal notation of time, there are only 12 hours.
⠀
🔹13.00 – pierwsza
🔹22.00 – dziesiąta
⠀
2️⃣ If now the big arrow is at 6, i.e. half of some hour (for example, 16.30), then we use the construction “wpół do” - “wpół do piątej“.
⠀
🔹18.30 – wpół do siódmej
🔹8.30 – wpół do dziewiątej
⠀
3️⃣ If the minute hand is in the first half of the dial (up to 30 minutes), the construction with the preposition “po” (“after”) is used.
⠀
🔹16.15 – piętnaście po czwartej
🔹8.05 – pięć po osmej
⠀
4️⃣ If the minute hand is in the second half of the dial (after 30 minutes), the construction with the preposition “za” (“without”) is used.
⠀
🔹15.45 – za piętnaście czwarta
🔹10.55 – za pięć jedenasta
⠀
‼️ Quite often in Polish, expressions such as “północ” (midnight) and “południe” (noon) are used.
⠀
‼️"15 minutes" can be replaced by the word kwadrans (quarter).
⠀
🔹12.15 – kwadrans po dwunastej
🔹4.45 – za kwadrans piąta
