Ka210 ADU Media Literacy The Key to Critical Thinking

The Media Literacy-The Key to Critical Thinking project helps adult educators to promote active participation to foster media literacy and critical thinking skills of young adults aged 25-40 years old, who are active social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok) users, and encounter problems in distinguishing the genuine content.

On 27 June, we held a Media Literacy Training for adults aged 25–40, focused on building the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the online world critically and responsibly.

Participants explored how information is created and shared online, learned practical ways to verify sources, and gained a clearer understanding of fake news, manipulation tactics, and the role of algorithms and social media in shaping what we see.

Through interactive activities and discussions, they developed stronger critical-thinking habits: questioning content, comparing reliable sources, assessing evidence, and forming informed opinions rather than accepting information at face value.

Thank you to everyone who brought curiosity, thoughtful questions, and valuable perspectives to the day! 💙

🇵🇱 Zbliżamy się do mety! 🏁 Za nami kolejne, niezwykle owocne spotkanie projektowe konsorcjum „Media Literacy - The Key to Critical Thinking”.

Wspólnie z naszymi wspaniałymi partnerami z Łotwy i Rumunii podsumowaliśmy intensywne lipcowe działania.

Dziękujemy Asociația Se Poate oraz LJAC za doskonałą współpracę! 🤝

🇬🇧 Approaching the finish line! 🏁 We just had another highly productive progress meeting for the „Media Literacy - The Key to Critical Thinking” project.
Together with our amazing partners from Latvia and Romania, we summarized our intensive July activities. The highlights? Successfully implemented local workshops for adults and an outstanding social media reach – around 8,000 views this month! 🚀 Thank you!

We also approved the action plan for August, focusing heavily on promoting our Good Practices Guide. 📖 Now it’s time for a well-deserved summer break before we kick off the Final Report preparations. 📝

Thank you to Asociația Se Poate and LJAC for the excellent teamwork! 🤝

Testimonial 3 from Latvia - Cognitive Empathy and Lateral Cross-Referencing

LV: "Ir ļoti svarīgi aplūkot pretējo viedokli." Mūsu darbnīcas dalībniece skaidro, kā atrast izeju no komfortablā informācijas burbuļa un izvairīties no nepārbaudītām ģimenes tenkām. Ja portāls publicē ziņu, vienmēr meklē alternatīvu apstiprinājumu oficiālos kanālos! Neesi slinks - aktīvi iesaisties informācijas meklēšanā, filtrē avotus, ieklausies savā iekšējā balsī un paplašini savu redzesloku, nevis akli uzticies autoritātēm. 🧠🌐

EN: "It's crucial to look at the opposite opinion." Our workshop participant explains how to break free from the comfort of the information bubble and avoid unverified family gossip. If a news portal publishes an article, always look for alternative confirmation on official channels! Don't be lazy - actively engage in information seeking, filter your sources, trust your inner voice, and expand your horizons instead of blindly trusting authority. 🧠🌐

Digital Media Impact: Who Controls Your News?

Escaping information bubbles requires courage and a deep understanding of how information is structurally created. In our recent LJAC workshop in Latvia, in addition to the ESC method (Emotions, Source, Claim) and the fact-checking drama (where participants engaged in a theatrical role-play), we delved into the macro-level impact of digital media.

A crucial step in advanced media literacy is unmasking media ownership. We rarely ask ourselves: who is funding the news we consume? By investigating corporate ownership matrices and financial holdings, our participants learned to recognize the hidden financial and political interests that shape our information space and dictate editorial lines. Understanding "who" creates the news and "why" helps uncover systemic biases built into corporate news production. The energy and engagement of the local participants during these structural analyses were phenomenal. Stay tuned as we continue to share Good Practices from our project!

Testimonial 2 from Latvia - Social Epistemics and Institutional Verification

EN: Our participants share their experience! The biggest aha moment in our LJAC media literacy workshop was discussing with others - understanding how different people view the world and where they source their information. It is crucial to realize that we all live in different informational realities. To step out of your bubble, always authenticate information via official documents, rely on authoritative sources, and check the links that truly verify the facts before believing them! 🔍

Parody and Satire: Humor as a Weapon Against Disinformation

Successfully navigating the digital world requires innovative tools! At the May 30th LJAC workshop, we gathered a passionate group of young adults to master source verification skills as part of our Erasmus+ project. Did you know that humor is one of the most powerful weapons against disinformation?

In our increasingly polarized online spaces, anger and fear are often used to manipulate us. To counter this, we proudly introduced a methodology that explores parody and satire as pedagogical interventions. Participants learned how to recognize intentional satire so as not to accidentally spread it as fake news. Furthermore, they discovered how to reverse-engineer these tactics, using parody to creatively expose, mock, and de-escalate manipulative content on social media. It's all about fighting lies with laughter and critical thinking! A big thank you to our partners Rajs Enterprise and Asociația Se Poate for sharing these brilliant methodologies!

Testimonial 1 From Latvia - Filter Bubbles and Behavioral Essentialism

LV: "Es sapratu, ka man ir kritiskā domāšana, bet citiem tās var nebūt." Mūsu "Erasmus+" darbnīcā Latvijā (LJAC) dalībnieki atklāja informācijas burbuļu patieso ietekmi uz sabiedrību un to, cik viegli algoritmi var manipulēt ar mūsu uztveri. Galvenā atziņa? Samaziniet bezmērķīgu ritināšanu sociālajos tīklos un uzticieties tikai pārbaudītiem avotiem, ekspertiem un oficiāliem ziņu kanāliem. Sargiet savu uzmanību! 💡

EN: "I realized that I have critical thinking skills, but others don't." In our Erasmus+ workshop, LJAC participants discovered the profound impact of information filter bubbles on society and how easily algorithms can manipulate our perception. The main takeaway? Reduce mindless scrolling on social networks and rely strictly on verified sources, educated professionals, and official news channels. Protect your attention! 💡

Debunk in 30 Seconds: Verify Facts Quickly and Effectively

Empowering communities: Successfully navigating the digital world! On May 30th, the "Latvijas Jauniešu Attīstības Centrs" (LJAC) successfully hosted an engaging local workshop in Latvia, which is one of the cornerstones of the Erasmus+ "Media Literacy – The Key to Critical Thinking" project. We gathered a passionate group of 10 young adults (aged 25 to 40) for an intensive, hands-on day dedicated to combating digital disinformation.

In today's fast-paced digital landscape, false narratives spread in the blink of an eye. That is why one of the most effective methods we learned from our international partners is "Debunk in 30 Seconds". This practice teaches the SIFT method: Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage, and Trace claims back to their original context. Instead of judging a post by its appearance, we train users in "lateral reading"—leaving the original app entirely to verify facts quickly using short video formats before hitting the share button. Instead of listening to traditional lectures, our participants learned by doing! By equipping adult learners with these practical, platform-native tools, we are taking vital steps toward building a more critical-thinking and resilient society.
