16th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2023

The 16th International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) ended in Katowice.

🏆🇸🇮 Peter Andolšek from Slovenia got title of Absolute Winner. He also received gold medal and the titles of Best in Observations and Best in Data Analysis.

🏆🇷🇴 The title of the Best in Theoretical Tasks was won by Andrei - Darius Dragomir - representative of Romania.

The jury awarded the Participants with 🥇27 gold, 🥈41 silver and 🥉50 bronze medals and 29 honorable mentions.

A team competition was also organized, in which players from different countries competed in randomly selected teams. This year, the following teams won ex auequo:

🇨🇾 The prize for the best Olympic posters went to the teams of Afghanistan and Cyprus

"It was the best organized Olympiad" - said prof. Aniket Sule - President of the IOAA.

The International Olympiad in Astronomy and Astrophysics was held in the Silesian Voivodeship (Śląskie. Pozytywna energia) for the second time. The previous one was organized in 2011. This year's competition was attended by 250 competitors from 50 countries.

"Congratulations to all the winners - the friendships you made here will pay off in your further scientific work" - said Jakub Chełstowski, Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship.

👉🇧🇷 The next competition will take place next year in Brazil.

16th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics 2023 reached its' final stage. The event would be possible if not the support of many institutes like Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia - the creator of Metropolitan Science and Education Support Fund.

The aim of the Metropolitan Science and Education Support Fund programme implemented by Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia🏗🧪🧬🔬 is to increase the attractiveness of the scientific and educational offer of universities, which will encourage young people to study at GZM universities.

📌The fund offers support in several ways, but the most well-known is to support the universities in inviting both scientists representing the world's leading universities and winners of significant awards on a global scale.

Yesterday, the leaders visited their students during the Cultural Evening. It was the moment when the Olympians had their phones returned to them. The stress seems to be gone. Now, the participants are patiently awaiting tomorrow's verdict.

Today we're in Crystal Mountain hotel in Wisła, a beautiful town in the middle of Beskidy Mountains.

In here, from morning till late night the jurors are checking, point by point, how students have solved their tasks and then they discuss it with the team leaders.

🎥 Today our cameraman visited the Silesian Planetarium in Chorzów Planetarium Śląskie. There he watched the final round of the Olympiad. Afterwards he went to team leaders' hotel in Wisła (Crystal Mountain), where currently evaluation of students' work is done. It is here, where the final verdict of the Olympiad will be made. 🥁

🪐The final round of the IOAA. Today, the Olympians returned to the Silesian Planetarium (Planetarium Śląskie). They were solving further tasks. Firstly, in the foyer and then under the artificial sky of Planetarium.

Today, together with the team leaders, we visited the Guido coal mine in Zabrze (Zabytkowa Kopalnia Guido). At the level of -320 meters, everyone was greeted by a mining brass band.
