This summer, prof. Artur Słomka and Nicolaus Copernicus, the university’s patron, this time in a pocket sized version, made their way to Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. For four weeks, they worked together in the Molecular Neurogenetics Unit, focusing on extracellular vesicles, membrane bound structures released by cells that transport proteins, lipids and genetic material and play an important role in communication between cells. The research involved isolating and studying these vesicles, working with cells and nucleic acids, and using modern laboratory equipment to analyse biological samples. Copernicus carefully supervised the work from different laboratory stations and, judging by the photographic evidence, seemed surprisingly comfortable with twenty first century biomedical research. Astonishing!
