With deep sorrow, we have learned that our Dear Friend and PATA participant, Ian G. Patterson, passed away on February 3, 2025.
It is an unimaginable loss for all of us, and our sincere condolences go out to his family and friends.
We will remember Ian as a kind and energetic person, always ready to lift our spirits with a witty comment or joke. He was a great, innovative artist, constantly exploring new techniques, and above all, a warm and wonderful person.
He will be deeply missed by so many of us who had the fortune of meeting him in Łódź during our PATA Summer Courses, in which he participated a record five times between 2015 and 2019.
Here is how Ian described his bio and his PATA experience on the occasion of our online exhibition LOCKDOWN 2020 – PATA Uniting People:

“I have been developing as a printmaker since 2013, during my retirement as a Physics and Mathematics teacher. I took interest and developed skills in black and white photography which developed into working with photogravure processes. During the same period I took an interest in printmaking especially using intaglio techniques. After attending several workshops in the UK, I felt brave enough to try further. This bought me to PATA! I have attended five PATA printmaker sessions and after each one I have used the skills I have learned to develop further.

I have developed my drypoint and photopolymer techniques, along with the use of chine-colle. Also PATA has provided such a generous environment filled with such skilful and enthusiastic tutors, assistants and participants. It is a necessary part of my development as an artist to come back for more each year! Add to that the vibrancy and energy of the city of Lodz and my CV is complete!”

We share with you some memories from the five years of meeting Ian during the following courses:
• 2015 – The Intaglio Techniques Course with the late Prof. Krzysztof Wawrzyniak
• 2016 – Graphic Diversity – Relief Print, Intaglio, and Lithography with Tomasz Matczak, PhD
• 2017 – Printmaking as an Open Medium with Prof. Renata Papista from Sarajevo
• 2018 – Graphic Diversity – Lithography, Intaglio, and Relief Print with Tomasz Matczak, PhD
• 2019 – Printmaking in the 3rd and 4th Dimension with Prof. Marilene Oliver from the University of Alberta in Edmonton
