Why are the most resilient organisms on Earth so colorful? 10/06/2026

🌈 Can some of the world’s most resilient microorganisms help make industry more sustainable?

As part of the E2Top programme, TUL student Zuzanna Jachowicz explored carotenoids produced by thermophilic microorganisms—organisms that thrive in extreme heat. These natural pigments are not only remarkably stable and vibrant but could also offer an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic, petroleum-based dyes.

🔬 From food and cosmetics to sustainable textiles and bio-based paints, the potential applications are wide-ranging. The project also provided valuable international research experience, including an internship at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan.

Discover how cutting-edge research and international collaboration are shaping the future of sustainable innovation. 🌍

Why are the most resilient organisms on Earth so colorful? Colorants accompany us in clothing, cosmetics, and food, but they are rarely associated with extreme living conditions. Meanwhile, some of the most promising pigments are produced by microorganisms that thrive at high temperatures. Thermophiles produce compounds with intense colors, remarkable stabi...

Water rolls off, science works – hydrophobic fabrics from TUL 26/05/2026

💧 Water rolls off, science works!

At Lodz University of Technology, textile engineering student Izabela Myjak explored how fabric structure and surface modifications can create hydrophobic materials — inspired by nature, like the self-cleaning effect of lotus leaves 🌿

Her research shows how smart textile engineering can improve everyday products and specialist applications alike: from sportswear and upholstery to medical fabrics.

Through the E2Top programme, Izabela also had the opportunity to present her work internationally and grow her scientific network 🌍🔬

Innovation can start with something as simple as a drop of water — and lead to materials ready for special tasks ✨

Water rolls off, science works – hydrophobic fabrics from TUL Materials for special tasks—those resistant to moisture—have come under the scientific scrutiny of Izabela Myjak. A textile engineering student in the E2Top program, she investigated how fabric structure and surface modification affect hydrophobic properties.
