While Welsh is considered an endangered and marginalised language in the United Kingdom, it's from Welsh that we get the word "penguin" (pingwin). 🐧

It's a compound noun made up of "pen" (head) and "gwyn" (white). ⚪️

While most modern penguins have black heads, the name was first used for the now extinct great auk (picutred).
