Homophones. Words that sound the same but are spelled differently. Today’s example: weather and whether. Weather: The state of the atmosphere. Whether: A conjunction used to introduce the first of two alternatives.

“The crack of dawn.” This English idiom means: very early in the morning. Luckily, we have English Club in the evening and I don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn to get there. Join us Tuesdays at 18.30. Orla 13.
"Better late than never." This English idiom means, doing something late is better than not doing it at all.

When I posted the time for English club last night I made an American mistake. I wrote 16.30 instead of 18.30. I meant 18.30 or 6:30 pm in American time keeping. When you’ve done something for over 60 years it’s hard to get your brain to switch. I’ll keep trying. And I’m impressed with you who are learning English as a second or third language. Impressive. It was Valentine’s day this week. What “terms of endearment” do you call someone you love? Darling and Sweetheart are common American terms. My husband calls me a shortened version of Sweetheart—Sweetie. I call him, Handsome—as in, “Hey Handsome, can you open this bottle of pickles for me?” Hope it was a great day for you!

Fog. It’s foggy outside. Words with similar meanings include, mist, haze, smog, and murk. Mist and haze are both lighter than fog. Murk is thicker than regular fog. And smog is fog combined with smoke or air pollution. Be careful out there!
This is time of year feels gloomy outside. Gloomy means dark or poorly lit or causing depression. Lift that gloom by coming to English Club Tuesday at Orla 13. Beginners at 18.00; advanced speakers at 18.30. Coming will help you feel the opposite of gloomy which is bright, cheerful, and upbeat.
