Recently, my website was hit by a Google Core Update, which affected its rankings and traffic. I knew I had to take quick and effective action to bring it back. Using the latest strategies and focusing on Google's Helpful Content Update, I successfully recovered my site. Here's how I did it.
𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩𝐬 𝐈 𝐓𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲
1. 𝑼𝒑𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑩𝒂𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒏 𝑯𝒆𝒍𝒑𝒇𝒖𝒍 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑼𝒑𝒅𝒂𝒕𝒆 𝑮𝒖𝒊𝒅𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒔
I reviewed and updated all the articles on my website. The goal was to ensure that the content provided value to users, not just targeting keywords. I focused on helpful, informative content that answered user questions comprehensively.
2. 𝑭𝒊𝒙𝒆𝒅 𝑳𝒐𝒘-𝑽𝒂𝒍𝒖𝒆 𝑷𝒂𝒈𝒆𝒔
Low-value pages can hurt a website’s performance. I identified pages that weren't adding value, like:
- Thin content
- Outdated information
- Pages with duplicate or irrelevant content
- Instead of deleting them, I either improved these pages or merged them with related content to provide a better user experience.
3. 𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝑻𝒆𝒄𝒉𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒍 𝑺𝑬𝑶 𝑰𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒆𝒔
Technical SEO is crucial for a site’s health. I took care of the following:
- 404 Errors: Fixed all broken links and missing pages.
- Broken Pages: Redirected or repaired pages that weren’t functioning.
- Empty Pages: Removed any empty or placeholder pages that had no content.
- Slug Optimization: Cleaned up URLs by shortening and making them more relevant to the page’s content.
4. 𝑨𝒑𝒑𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒅 𝑺𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒄 𝑺𝑬𝑶
Instead of focusing just on keywords, I moved to topic-based SEO. This meant covering a subject in-depth rather than optimizing for specific keywords. By doing this:
- My content became more comprehensive.
- It provided better value to users.
- Search engines saw my site as an authority on the topics covered.
𝑹𝒆𝒔𝒖𝒍𝒕𝒔
- Within a few weeks of making these changes:
- My website’s rankings started improving.
- Traffic returned to normal levels.
- The site began attracting more relevant users looking for quality content.
𝑲𝒆𝒚 𝑻𝒂𝒌𝒆𝒂𝒘𝒂𝒚𝒔
- Content is King: Focus on creating content that is truly helpful and covers a topic thoroughly.
- Technical SEO Matters: Make sure there are no technical issues on your site like broken links or empty pages.
- Semantic SEO is the Future: Focusing on topic coverage rather than just keywords can improve your site’s authority and rankings.
