The History of the 1st English Language Center in Turbat Kech: SELC
Written By: Zahid Hussain Baloch, Part-2
The Struggle to Reopen SELC: A Story of Perseverance
After some months teaching in Turbat, Honorable Amanullah Marri had been transferred from Turbat, resulting in the permanent closure of the Social English Language Center (SELC). This led to the discontinuation of English language teaching programs for hundreds of male and female students of Turbat Kech, with no response from the students or the civil society.
Prior to the establishment of SELC, several instructors had taught English language individually in Turbat at different times. When I was a school student at Model High School Turbat , in the evening I learned English from a respected teacher (in Nokeen Market area at Turbat Market), a banker at UBL Bank Turbat, whose name I cannot recall. He had some students, but his transfer brought an end to teaching endeavors. His approach to teaching English was impressive, and he was friendly and cooperative.
Another instructor, Mr. Francis, taught English language in Dhobi Gali, Turbat, But according to some people he took money from individuals under the pretext of helping them to move to America. When he left Turbat, his students were left without English teaching as well.
During 1991-92/93, Professor Ghulam Shabir, former Principal of Government Degree College Turbat, initiated English language teaching in the evenings, free of charge. He was an outstanding teacher who guided his students with parental care, and his classes were enjoyable. I am proud to have been his student. However, his transfer led to the end of this initiative.
To summarize, no one had previously considered establishing an academic institution, perhaps due to the significant efforts required and the preference for easy financial gains, not tough one. I have always had a burning desire to do something innovative for my area and felt compelled to act.

After the closure of SELC, some students from low-income families insisted that I restart the English teaching process. As an orphan, I had already recently managed to complete some of my education in Karachi, including engineering studies, a Diploma in English Language from the Pak-American Cultural Center, a Diploma in Public Administration, and preparatory classes for CSS (Current Affairs and Pakistan Affairs) at the University of Karachi. I faced financial difficulties, relying on my elder brother, who had retired from the Oman Army. Now Renting building, arranging furniture and paying utility bills for a new institute were beyond my means.
Despite these challenges, I was determined to restart English teaching in Turbat. I gathered a small alumni group of SELC and discussed the possibility of recommencing classes. The small group was enthusiastic, but we lacked the resources to initiate the process. I had only had a small crockery and cutlery shop in Shambay Market Turbat which only could bear my pocket money. I searched for a suitable building and found one with four rooms next to Baloch Hospital, owned by Mr. Aslam Jusaki, a respected businessman. The rent was 3,500 rupees per month, which I could not afford.
Feeling isolated and uncertain, I missed the support of Honorable Judge Marri and the previous staff. I was unsure how to proceed, wondering how I would pay the rent while offering free classes to students.
