1. Measure the Target Bore Roughly
* Use an outside micrometer or vernier caliper to get an approximate dimension of the bore.
* This establishes your reference baseline for selecting parts and setting up tools.
2. Select and Install the Correct Anvil
* Choose an anvil or washer extension combination from your kit that matches the target dimension.
* Thread or snap the anvil securely onto the measuring head opposite the spring-loaded contact point.
3. Calibrate / Zero the Dial Indicator
* Set an outside micrometer to the exact target size and lock the spindle.
* Place the measuring head of the bore gauge between the micrometer anvils.
* Rotate the bezel on the dial indicator until the needle points precisely to 0 at the tightest reading (inflection point).
* Alternative: Use a master ring gauge of known size to zero the indicator.
4. Insert the Gauge into the Bore
* Tilt the gauge head slightly to fit it inside the cylinder or bore.
* Straighten the handle so the self-centering guide shoes align parallel to the cylinder walls.
5. Rock the Gauge to Find the Minimum Reading
* Slowly rock the handle back and forth along the axis of the bore.
* Watch the indicator needle move; it will sweep to a point, pause, and reverse direction.
* Note the inflection point (the point of maximum needle deflection)—this represents the true diameter perpendicular to the axis.
6. Calculate the Final Dimension
* Read the deviation from zero at the inflection point:
* Needle moves clockwise (past 0): The bore is smaller than the reference size by that amount.
* Needle moves counter-clockwise (before 0): The bore is larger than the reference size by that amount.
* Add or subtract the indicator reading from your preset reference size to determine the exact bore diameter.
7. Check for Taper and Out-of-Roundness
* Out-of-Round (Ovality): Measure at the same height while rotating the measuring head 90°. Compare the two readings.
* Taper: Take measurements at three distinc
