Department of International Relations- University of Sindh

The Bureau of STAGS and the Department of International Relations, in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Anti-Narcotic Force, organized a seminar titled “Anti-Drug Awareness Session and Counter Narcotics Campaign in Educational Institutions-Phase-II” On 12 May 2026 at the Nelson Mandela Hall.
The session aimed to raise awareness among the general public, especially students, about the various effects of different drugs.
The session speakers included Dr. Shehriyar Qambrani, In-charge of the Anti-Narcotic Force (ANF) Rehabilitation Center and Mr. Siddique, the Additional SHO of ANF Hyderabad.
Dr. Shaharyar Qambrani delivered a thorough overview of drugs, detailing their types and roles in society. He pointed out commonly abused substances and examined how both legal and illegal drugs continue to influence communities at various levels. A major part of the seminar centered on the effects of drugs, highlighting their harmful impact on physical health, mental well-being, and social connections. The concept of addiction was clearly distinguished between substance addiction and behavioral addiction, demonstrating how both can disrupt an individual’s life. The speaker also discussed the causes of drug addiction, such as peer pressure, psychological stress, socio-economic issues, and lack of awareness. Additionally, he explained the stages of drug addiction, helping participants understand how casual use can lead to dependency.
Mr. Siddique emphasized that drug abuse has become a significant crisis in the country, particularly affecting educational institutions. He mentioned that the Anti-Narcotic Force is actively working to address this social and psychological issue, and they require support from schools and universities to strengthen their initiatives through awareness sessions.
The session was followed by the thought-provoking questions from students, which were thoroughly addressed by the speakers.

At the end of the session, Professor Dr. Ishrat Afshan Abbasi, Head of the Department of International Relations, and Mr. Ajwaid Bhatti, Director of STAGS, thanked the guest speakers for their participation. They highlighted the University of Sindh’s strong dedication to helping the ANF teams make substantial strides in fighting drug abuse.

Four students of the Department of International Relations named
Mr. Syed zamin shah , Ms. Jaweria Shaukat, Ms. Aiza Batool and Ms. Shama Shakir participated in the Inter-University Speech Competition on the tilte “The Twin Legacy: Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s Fight for Democracy and Women’s Destiny” .
The program was orgamized by the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Convention Center, University of Sindh.
Presenting an enthusiastic debate Ms. Shama Shakir from I.R BS-II stood first in the competition .

The successful second PhD Seminar of Mr Nisar Chandio was held on April 23, 2026 at the Nelson Mandella Hall , University of Sindh under the chair of the Dean Faculty of Social Sciences.

Mr Chandio is writing PhD dissertstion under the supervision of Professor Dr Ishrat Abbasi on the subject "Exploring the Rise of Islamophobia in India during Modi Era and its Effects on Indo-Pak Relations"

On the same date , the first successful Mphil seminar of Ms. Bakhtawar took place. She is working under the supervision of Dr Humera Hakro on " Changing Security Dynamics in the Middle East: Iran Vs Israel".

Glimpses of the active participation of the students of the International Relations in the International Conference on “China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Achievements, Challenges and Way Forward” organized by the Area Studies Centre for Far East and South East Asia, University of Sindh, Jamshoro.
As always, it was wonderful to see the dynamic involvement of I.R. students in the conference as energetic volunteers, disciplined audience, eager listeners, and passionate learners engaged with scholars for academic growth. Keep it up!

The Department of International Relations organised a lecture on " Institutionalizing Civilizational Exchange in the Realm of Regional Connectivity: Confucious Institutes and Pak-China Cultural Amalgamation" on Thursday, 12th February. The speaker of the session was Dr. Tahir Mumtaz Awan , the Director of the Confucius Institute at the University of Sargodha.
The lecture was presided over by Prof Dr Ishrat Abbasi Chairperson of the Department of International Relations University of Sindh Jamshorio.
Dr Awan began his lecture by highlighting the importance of Confucius Institutes. He explained that these institutes play a vital role in promoting and teaching the Chinese language and culture. He further shared that there are five Confucius Institutes in Pakistan, which are funded by the Chinese government.
During his lecture, Dr. Awan shared his academic experiences with the audience and emphasized the importance of learning the Chinese language, considering China as a brotherly state of Pakistan. He also encouraged students to write opinion articles to enhance their academic growth and analytical skills.
The lecture concluded with an interactive Question and Answer session, where students actively participated and engaged in meaningful discussion. The session was concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. farooque leghari, the Associate Professor of I.R department .

In keeping with tradition, the Department of International Relations started the new academic year with a faculty meeting, where discussions centered on academic and extracurricular activities. On Monday, January 26, 2026, the meeting began with a collective prayer for the souls of Dr. Imran’s father and Dr. Ali Khan’s mother. Afterwards, the meeting addressed four main items: approval of the new semester's course schedule, an action plan to improve graduation theses, finalization of the previous semester's results report, and plans to undertake academic seminars and discussion sessions in the upcoming semester. The meeting was led by Chairperson Professor Dr. Ishrat Abbasi, with participants including Dr. Farooq Leghari, Dr. Imran Ali, Dr. Ali Khan, Dr. Shaban Sehto, Mr. Siraj Nizamani, Ms. Abira Khokhar, and Mr. Ajiz Rind.
