Solar panel that will work at night

Researchers at Stanford University have developed a new type of solar panel that can generate electricity, even at night. An innovative photovoltaic (or PV) cell uses a process called radiative cooling, capable of generating enough power to charge a phone or run an LED light.

“The solar panel turned out to be a very efficient thermal radiator. So, at night, the solar panel can actually reach a temperature that’s below the ambient air temperature, and that’s a rather unusual opportunity for power harvesting,” said Shanhui Fan, the lead researcher on the project.

The researcher added that despite generation potential of the “night” PVs being much lower compared to traditional panels, “it may potentially be useful for some of the low power density applications”.

"We tend to think of the sun as the important renewable energy resource. The coldness of outer space is also an extremely important renewable energy resource," he added.
