Butler Yeats (1865–1939) was one of the greatest poets of the 20th century and a leading figure of Irish literature. He was born on 13 June 1865 in Dublin and spent much of his childhood in Ireland and England. His father, John Butler Yeats, was a painter who encouraged his artistic interests.
Yeats played an important role in the Irish Literary Revival, a movement that sought to promote Irish culture, folklore, and literature. He helped establish the Abbey Theatre in Dublin.
In 1923, Yeats received the Nobel Prize in Literature for his outstanding contribution to poetry. He remained active in literature and politics until his death on 28 January 1939 in Menton.
