Sleep issues are very common in autistic children—
Here are some of the most common causes:
1. Melatonin Imbalance
Many autistic children have lower levels of melatonin (the hormone that tells the body it’s time to sleep).
Their circadian rhythm (internal clock) might be out of sync, causing them to feel awake late at night or wake up too early.
Why? Melatonin production is controlled by the brain, and in autism, there are often differences in how the brain regulates these processes.
2. Sensory Sensitivities
Some children are extremely sensitive to noise, light, texture, or even temperature.
These sensitivities make it hard for the brain to “switch off” and relax.
3. Anxiety and Overstimulation
Children with autism often experience high levels of anxiety, especially around change or transitions.
Bedtime is a major transition, and without a predictable, calming routine, it can trigger distress.
4. Difficulty Understanding Sleep Cues
Autistic children may not recognize the internal signals that it’s time to rest.
They may not “feel tired” the way others do, or they might not know how to act on that feeling (e.g., lying down, closing their eyes).
5. Co-occurring Conditions
ADHD, anxiety, epilepsy, GI problems (like reflux or constipation), or pain can all affect sleep—and many of these are more common in autistic children.
For example, constipation or reflux might disturb sleep even if your child can’t explain it.
6. Diet and Gut Health
Some children are sensitive to sugar, dyes, or certain foods (e.g., dairy or gluten), which may affect their behavior and sleep.
Poor gut health is also linked to poor sleep.
What Can Help?A consistent bedtime routine (same time, same steps, every night).
A dark, quiet, and cool sleeping environment.
Reducing or avoiding screens at least an hour before bed.Using weighted blankets (if your child finds them calming).A melatonin supplement — but only under a doctor’s guidance.
A sensory audit of the bedroom: test different sheets, pajamas, lighting, etc.Consulting with a sleep specialist, paediatrician, or occupational therapist.
