"Do not go gentle into that good night" is Dylan Thomas’s most famous poem, written in 1951 for his dying father. It is a villanelle—a highly structured 19-line poem—that serves as a powerful, rhythmic plea for the dying to fight against the inevitability of death.

*What is an Elegy?*
An elegy is a poem that expresses sadness and grief, usually about someone who’s died or a big loss. It’s reflective, often remembers the person, and can end with acceptance or hope.

*Key Features of an Elegy*
- *Sad, reflective tone* – expresses grief, loss, or mourning
- *Remembers the lost person/thing* – praises or recalls memories
- *Ends with acceptance, hope, or consolation* – often finds a way to cope

*A Bit of History*
Elegies go way back to ancient Greece (think poets like Theocritus, Virgil). They were laments for the dead, often formal and serious. Over time, they evolved to include personal emotions, nature themes, and deeper reflections on mortality.
- *English poets* like John Milton (_Lycidas_) and Thomas Gray (_Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard_) shaped the modern elegy.
- Today, elegies are still written for loss, but can explore broader themes of grief, memory, and healing.
