Pakistan Losing 6.5% of GDP to Corruption, Nearly $16 Billion

The IMF’s latest report reveals that Pakistan is losing around 6.5% of its GDP roughly $16 billion to corruption driven by deep-rooted elite capture. The Fund notes that over Rs5 trillion in corruption has been identified in just the past three years, calling it merely “scratching the surface.”

According to the report, citizens are routinely compelled to pay bribes, while judicial capture and a lack of accountability have intensified corruption and accelerated the outflow of illicit capital.
