As seen on : The Pale Blue Dot

"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there -- on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."

-Carl Sagan, "Pale Blue Dot," 1994

This image of Earth, captured by NASA's Voyager 1 at a distance of more than 4 billion miles, inspired Carl's famous quote.

We all know the moon has an effect on Earth's tides but did you know the Earth has an effect on the moon called the lunar tide?

The gravitational tug-of-war between Earth and the moon actually raises a small bulge on the moon and the position of this bulge shifts slightly over time. http://1.usa.gov/1wyWtc6

Meet Reid Wiseman (and Giraffiti)

He's only been in space for a few days, but already NASA astronaut Reid Wiseman is attracting attention for his prolific output on Twitter. In a recent post about Wiseman's space photography, the Washington Post noted: "Wiseman will be in space for another six months, and judging from his tweets so far, he appears to be a must-follow — and, perhaps, the long-awaited American answer to Canada’s rock star astronaut Chris Hadfield." Wiseman tweeted this photograph and the message: "Hangin’ with Giraffiti in the Cupola. Goodnight from " yesterday.

NASA's saucer-shaped Low Density Super Decelerator is scheduled to launch next week.

The LDSD is a mission to test a rapidly inflating decelerator that could one day help us bring larger, heavier payloads, like future Martian spacecraft, to Mars. http://1.usa.gov/1m5lFif

Viewing the Earth From Space 22/05/2014

Despite any political differences between the United States and Russia, the space agencies of the two countries continue their cooperative work in Earth's orbit, aboard the International Space Station. Apart from the research being done in microgravity, ISS crew members continue to send back amazing images of our home world, photographed from low Earth orbit. Gathered here are recent images of Earth from aboard the ISS, and from a handful of other NASA satellites. Full entry: http://theatln.tc/1qVCioy
