RECOGNISING AUTISM
Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a developmental disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate, socialize and interact with others. People with autism often have difficulty understanding social cues, making eye contact, and using and understanding nonverbal communication such as facial expressions and body language. They may also have repetitive behaviors or routines, and may struggle with sensory processing, which can lead to over- or under-sensitivity to sights, sounds, and other stimuli. Autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning that it can affect people in different ways and to different degrees. Some people with autism may have significant challenges in daily life, while others may have only mild difficulties.

CENTRALITY OF ECD PROGRAMS FOR EARLY RECOGNITION AND MANAGEMENT OF AUTISM:
Early Childhood Development (ECD) plays a crucial role in the early recognition of autism in children [1]. Autism, a neurodevelopmental disorder, affects a child's communication, social interaction, and behavior [1]. Early diagnosis and intervention are essential to support children with autism and improve their long-term outcomes [1].
ECD involves a range of activities and experiences that help children develop their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical abilities in their early years [2]. ECD programs can help parents and caregivers identify developmental delays and potential signs of autism in children [3]. For instance, children with autism may display delayed speech, lack of eye contact, difficulty in social interaction, and repetitive behaviors [3]. Through ECD programs, parents and caregivers can learn about these early warning signs and seek early diagnosis and intervention services [3].
ECD programs can also support children with autism in their development and learning^2. For instance, early intervention services, such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy, can help children with autism improve their communication, social skills, and behavior [4]. ECD programs can also provide parents and caregivers with tools and resources to support their child's development at home and in the community [2].
Shortly, ECD plays a critical role in the early recognition of autism in children [1]. By providing parents and caregivers with information and support, ECD programs can help identify developmental delays and potential signs of autism, leading to early diagnosis and intervention [3]. Early diagnosis and intervention can improve children's outcomes and support their development and learning [1,4].

World TB Day 2023: "Yes, we can end TB."
This year's theme reflects the possibility of ending the TB epidemic and emphasizes the need for continued efforts to achieve this goal. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), TB is still one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide and the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, with an estimated 1.5 million deaths in 2020.
However, significant progress has been made in recent years, with a 21% reduction in TB mortality rate since 2015. The WHO's End TB Strategy, launched in 2015, aims to reduce TB deaths by 90% and TB incidence by 80% by 2030 compared to 2015 levels.
To achieve these goals, it is essential to continue investing in TB research and development, strengthening TB prevention and treatment efforts, and improving access to TB prevention and treatment services for vulnerable populations. Additionally, it is crucial to address the social determinants of TB, such as poverty, malnutrition, and poor living conditions, and to integrate TB care into universal health coverage.
In conclusion, the theme for World TB Day 2023 reflects the possibility of ending the TB epidemic and emphasizes the need for continued efforts to achieve this goal. By investing in TB research and development, strengthening TB prevention and treatment efforts, and improving access to TB prevention and treatment services for vulnerable populations, we can accelerate progress towards ending the TB epidemic.

"The anatomy of a canary lets it absorb oxygen during both inhalation and exhalation, making it twice as susceptible to poisonous air as other portable animals like mice. Canaries were used to detect carbon monoxide and other toxic gasses in coal mines in the U.K. until 1986."
