Essay
Human beings often measure life in the number of years, as if longevity were
synonymous with greatness. Yet, history, philosophy, and literature remind us that the
true value of existence does not lie in the span of time but in the weight of one's
actions. A person may live a hundred years but leave behind no legacy, while another
may die young yet continue to inspire generations. The phrase "we live in deeds, not in
years" captures this timeless truth. It is not the length of life that matters, but the depth
of one's impact. In the words of Abraham Lincoln, "In the end, it's not the years in
your life that count. It's the life in your years." This essay explores how deeds, not
years, measure the essence of human greatness.
This philosophy is deeply rooted in classical wisdom and literature. The ancient
Greeks glorified heroic deeds in epics such as Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, where
warriors like Achilles chose short but glorious lives over long but obscure ones.
Similarly, Shakespeare echoed the same sentiment in Macbeth, where he highlights the
futility of time when divorced from meaning: "Life's but a walking shadow." In
English poetry, Philip James Bailey immortalized the idea in his lines, "We live in
deeds, not years; in thoughts, not breaths; in feelings, not in figures on a dial." These
works emphasize that immortality is secured not by duration but by significance.
Literature across cultures continues to remind humanity that a purposeful moment
outweighs an empty century.
History is replete with personalities who lived relatively short lives but whose actions
changed the course of human civilization. Alexander the Great died at the age of 32,
yet in less than a decade of conquest, he reshaped the known world, leaving behind an
empire that influenced cultures for centuries. Similarly, Joan of Arc, executed at just
19, became a symbol of French resistance and national identity, her courage far
outliving her years. On the other hand, countless monarchs and aristocrats who
enjoyed long reigns have faded into obscurity, remembered neither for wisdom nor for
justice. Such contrasts highlight that history remembers those who act, not those who
merely exist.
Philosophical and religious traditions also reinforce this principle. In Islam, the
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized deeds over lifespan, teaching that the best
among people are those who bring the greatest benefit to others. Christianity echoes
this through the parable of the talents, urging believers to use their gifts meaningfully
rather than waste them in idleness. Buddhism similarly values mindful living and
compassionate action over the illusion of longevity. Philosophers from Aristotle to
Kant argued that virtue and duty, not mere survival, define a life well lived. Across
cultures, wisdom traditions converge on the truth that the moral weight of actions far
surpasses the fleeting number of years.
The same truth applies in the realm of science and intellectual thought. Blaise Pascal,
who lived only 39 years, revolutionized mathematics, physics, and philosophy, leaving
behind discoveries still taught today. Srinivasa Ramanujan, an Indian mathematician
who died at 32, astonished the world with contributions that continue to guide modern
number theory. Even in technology, pioneers like Alan Turing, who lived only 41
years, transformed computation and artificial intelligence. These examples prove that
intellectual deeds, no matter how compressed into a short life, continue to enrich
humanity long after physical death.
Social reformers and activists embody another form of lasting legacy. Malala
Yousafzai, though still young, has already achieved global recognition for her struggle
for girls' education. Martin Luther King Jr., assassinated at 39, continues to be a
symbol of justice, equality, and civil rights. Nelson Mandela, though he lived a long
life, is remembered not merely for his years but for his struggle against apartheid and
his deeds of reconciliation. In all these cases, it is not the biological duration of
existence but the courage to act meaningfully that immortalized their names.
Artists, poets, and writers have likewise proved that their creations live longer than
their bodies. John Keats, who died at 25, left behind poetry that continues to inspire
centuries later. Similarly, Mozart died at 35, yet his symphonies resound across the
globe. In Urdu literature, Mir Taqi Mir and Mirza Ghalib penned verses that still
define cultural identity. Art, music, and literature immortalize deeds in ways that defy
time, ensuring that creators remain alive in collective memory even as their years were
brief.
The futility of longevity without purpose becomes clear when we consider those who
spend decades in pursuit of triviality or self-indulgence. A man who lives to ninety but
leaves behind no contribution is forgotten within years of his death. Meanwhile, those
who sacrifice for humanity endure in memory forever. The Roman historian Tacitus
noted that "the desire for fame is the last infirmity of noble minds," yet true fame
comes not through desire but through action. A meaningless century of life cannot
match a single moment of courageous sacrifice or transformative creation.
Modern examples further highlight this truth. Princess Diana, who died at 36, is
remembered for her humanitarian work, compassion, and efforts to destigmatize
AIDS. Arfa Karim, Pakistan's computer prodigy, who passed away at 16, left behind a
legacy of inspiration for millions of young Pakistanis in technology. On the other
hand, anonymous figures who lived longer but without contribution remain absent
from history's pages. This reminds us that in the contemporary age of rapid change,
impactful deeds continue to define true immortality.
In conclusion, the idea that "we live in deeds, not in years" transcends cultures, eras,
and disciplines. From ancient heroes to modern reformers, from poets to scientists,
humanity remembers those who act, not those who merely live long. A life of deeds
secures a place in history, literature, and collective memory, while a life of idle years
fades into obscurity. As the Quran states, "Indeed, We record what they have put forth
and what they left behind" (36:12). Ultimately, human greatness is measured not in
years but in meaning, not in duration but in contribution. It is through our deeds that
we outlive time itself.

Dr Rizwan Ullah (PSP) 👏👏
Second position in Ex-FATA
I am a doctor and I am among those aspirants who are largely unaware of this CSS process until a good span of life. It was in 2022 when I first gathered the idea and the required information about taking CSS exam, and continuing my specialization training at the same time. Everything looked very unfamiliar at the beginning and it took me five months to prepare, alongside an 8-4 job with changing shifts to always keep my circadian clock disturbed. I attempted it in May 2022 and then forgot everything about it till the declaration of result on Dec 06, 2023. I couldn't qualify it that time but my score was encouraging, 617 with only 14 marks in essay. The next attempt was only 54 days away. I had a brief period of grief (three days) and then reopened my notes and started practicing more and more essays, again with the same job commitments. Those 51 days have meraculosly worked for me AlhamduLillah and I have been allocated to my preference group PSP, with second position in Ex-FATA. My journey for written part is thus of seven months combined, including the period of gathering information about subjects selection, how to prepare and which books and sources to follow. My purpose of sharing this story is that CSS may not necessarily be an years-long journey and might as well be done in a shorter duration, provided there is ample commitment and a correct course of action. My prayers are with all the aspirants out there. May you all succeed in your goals of life! Aameen.

*SOME THINGS TO BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHILE GOING TO SIT IN CSS EXAM*

Aspirants, who have been through CSS written exam, know that it is a different thing to prepare for CSS exam and it's quite another thing (read herculean task) to actually appear and sit in the CSS exam. As I have been through the CSS written exam thrice and Alhamdulillah qualified it thrice as well, so I am sharing those tips and tricks which every aspirant should keep in mind while appearing in the written portion. Most of the aspirants, who appear for the first time in CSS exam, do not know about such things or situations and find themselves all at sea when they face them in reality. The following guidelines can help them to perform in the papers in a better way.
1. Just one day prior to your first paper, visit your examination centre so that you should know the route to reach it. Furthermore, if they allow you, go inside the relevant exam hall and check your seat number as well. Because you can or will be hell nervous on the day of your first paper, things can go horribly wrong. Nervousness is a killer for your performance in the exam.
Likewise, if you are moving to some other city to stay at your relative’s home for the exam, you should do so some 4 days before the commencement of the exam so that you may adjust yourself with not only the environment of the home but also to attune your mind to study at a new place.
2. No matter what your study plan was, 4 days before the first paper, i.e. English Essay, just set each subject book aside and focus solely on English comprehension and English Essay papers. Practice précis, idea expansion and outlines of the essay.
English Essay is considered a nightmare for all the aspirants and rightly so because it demands not only the reflection of knowledge from an intellectual point of view but also calls for the physical stamina to write about 3000 words in a 3 hours slot. Furthermore, this paper in particular also haunts almost all of the aspirants psychologically, being the paper to grill most of the aspirants every year. Believe me, if this paper goes fine, you will lose half of the stress of CSS exam.
So, unless and until, you practice writing English 3 or 4 days before the final paper, you might be unable to set your rhythm for the upcoming papers.
3. Make sure to take everything with you required to sit in the exam room. This includes your roll number slip and CNIC. Additional stuff includes your spare pointers/ball points, markers and scale. It is much better to put all such things in a box or pouch a night before the paper.
4. Stop studying 30 minutes before the commencement of the paper. It will only make you incredibly nervous. It might give you the illusion that you have forgotten everything and now you do not possess any material at all to write in the paper. Though it will just be a deceptive illusion but still it is solid enough to ruin your paper. Just stroll in front of or around the exam room and try to recall all the prepared stuff in your mind in a calm and composed way.
In fact, do not take any book along with you to the exam center. “Na ho ga baanss, na bajay gi baansri”
5. If the paper demands writing continuously for the three hours, like English Essay paper, do not even think of taking a water or loo break. It will only waste your time. You know or remember anything to write or not, just keep on writing. In such kinds of papers, your nib of the pen should not leave the paper for more than a second.
You should not even bother looking at others how or what they are writing.
6. During the paper in the exam hall, you may have to listen to many voices from different corners of the hall after every 10, 15 minutes, “Sir, extra sheet”. Never pay heed to such voices. Do not take them as a caution to finish your paper in a hurry. Never lose your nerves after listening to such “extra sheet announcements” either. I remember I was attempting the English Essay paper when just after 30 minutes, a girl voice echoed inside the exam hall, “Sir, extra sheet”!!! And I was like, “Jumping Judas! Are you freaking kidding me?” Take all the time you need and do not even bother to look who asked for the sheet and why?
7. Between the two continuous hours break, you should eat something. Now, this is so imperative to understand that what you should eat because eating anything heavy might make you lethargic enough to feel sleepy while attempting the next paper. I remember, I ate fruit chaat and I was literally dozing off in the next paper.
The best things to eat or drink during this 2 hours break are chocolate, biscuits, bananas, tea, juice or coffee. Regardless of the fact that you are feeling hungry or not, do eat or drink something because you will definitely need the energy to cope with the next paper.
8. Do not sit continuously at one place between the break. If possible, take a stroll for 10 or 15 minutes because you had been sitting for 3 hours straight in the first paper and you will have to sit for 3 hours again for the next one. Strolling will refresh your mind and regulate the blood flow.
9. Us Pakistanis are a very helpful lot. Almost every one of us follows the motto of “Mashwara Muft Hai”. While it is truly supportive in some situations, it is surely a nuisance during such kind of competitive exams.
Before the paper and during the breaks, you may observe some guys acting like Pandits and Gurus of CSS exam, delivering their bhashans to some aspirants standing around and listening to them with rapt attention. Never commit the mistake to talk to anyone regarding the upcoming paper or the expected questions or the preparation itself.
Most often, we tend to consult other aspirants pertaining to the paper and preparation material. This habit or move is a killer. Now what happens is that if you talk to any aspirant before the paper and s/he tells you about those topics (which can only be asked in the paper when the hell will freeze over) which you have not prepared or even had not heard about, you are roasted. You will immediately lose all the (remaining) confidence left in you and consequently, you are likely to forget all the points, materials and data you had prepared so enthusiastically.
Always avoid such energy vampires. Stay confident in what you have prepared. Nonetheless, sometimes, there is no harm in having a little chit-chat with your study buddy if you did combined study with him/her.
Furthermore, do not make inquiries about the morning time paper after coming out of the exam room. If God forbid, it transpires to be wrong attempted (after matching your answers with others), you will never be able to perform excellent in the evening slot paper which might compensate for the previous paper.
10. It is so hectic and tiresome to sit in the CSS exam paper because you have to face 6 papers in 3 days and write for 6 hours in a day.
So, when you come back home in the evening you feel dog tired. Now after having the meal, rest for about 30 minutes and then begin revising the subjects of the next day papers. Study for about 4 hours. What most aspirants do is study continuously for 6 or 7 hours straight after coming back home, going to sleep at 2 AM and waking up in a hassle at 7 in the morning. I will never recommend it because you will clearly forget all the material in the morning you prepared at night.
So, the wise approach is to go to bed at about 11 PM, set the alarm for 4 or 5 AM and study in the morning for 2 or 3 hours. First of all, it will keep your brain running and secondly it will fresh up all your prepared material. Moreover, it sets the rhythm.
11. Never try to cheat during the paper. It gets you nowhere. It is plainly stupid to put all of your attempts of CSS exam (read CSS career) at risk in order to know merely 4 or 5 MCQ’s or a hint about the question. If you do not know the answer or cannot comprehend a question, simply rely on your hunch but please, do not be a kid in the CSS exam room who cheats to score 4 or 5 marks more than the other kids in the class. You are going to be an officer. Act like one.
12. Most significantly, never be a “laparwah” (careless) student while attempting any paper. No matter how good you are in writing, you will/can commit blunders of grammar, spellings, expression and punctuation while jotting down your answers on the answer sheet.
In order to avoid this wont, you MUST reserve 10 minutes at the end of each paper. I have put stress on the word MUST because I know that majority of the folks detest revising their own written material and at the end, do not feel like revising it. But it is the most recommended suggestion to revise the whole of your paper. Carelessness is a poison which has the capacity to turn the examiner against you.
13. In most of the papers, you will have to attempt 4 questions apart from the objective portion. So, allocate appropriate time to each question accordingly before attempting them. I will recommend allocating 40 minutes to each question. Not more than that, not less than that. Follow this routine strictly and keep looking at the watch after every 10 minutes or so.
14. Last but not the least, there will be so many aspirants among you who must be appearing in the CSS exam only for the sake of experience or trial and thinking of pursuing it seriously in the next attempt. Let me tell you, the belief with which you enter the exam room decides your performance in the paper. It is better to enter the exam room with a winner’s attitude because that might lead to success but stepping inside the room with a loser’s attitude will surely make one thing certain; defeat…. And you do not want it. Do you?

Regards CSP
Good Luck to you all!
