The aim of the Institute is to reduce the prevalence of blindness and visual impairment and to improve the quality of life of people with blindness, visual impairment and other eye ailments.

Annual Sports Week 2026 at PICO:
Annual Sports celebration was started today on 13th April, 2026 at PICO. Prof. Noor ul Iman, Chairman BoG MTI-HMC formally inaugurated PICO Sports Week as a Chief guest of the occasion while Dr. Gulzar Ahmad, Hospital Director MTI-HMC and Prof. Shehzad Akbar, Dean / CEO MTI-HMC, were the Guest of Honor of the Event .Prof. Sanaullah Jan, Director PICO, PICO faculty and staff were host for the event. The students of PICO from different disciplines and semesters participated in the different competition like Futsal, Badminton, Cricket, Carom board, Ludo and Tug of War. The event will continue for the whole week and prizes will be given to the Winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) in the closing ceremony of the sports week. At the end Prof. Sanaullah Jan, Director PICO, thanked the honorable the Chief Guest, Guest of honor, PICO staff and Organizers of the event for their support and contributions.

On Thursday, 9th April 2026, a cake-cutting ceremony was conducted by the 8th semester BS Vision Sciences students at PICO. The event was graced by the Director PICO, Prof. Sanaullah Jan, along with the In-Charge Undergraduate Studies, Ms. Samina Anwaar. A brief address was delivered by the Director, appreciating the students’ efforts and achievements. The ceremony concluded with a group photograph, capturing memorable moments of the occasion.

Vision of Hope – Mini Eye Camp for Corneal Transplant
It is with great pleasure to share that on Saturday, 11th April 2026, our dedicated corneal transplant team at Murad Eye Bank, PICO/HMC Peshawar successfully performed 29 corneal transplants in a single day. Alhamdulillah.
This remarkable achievement was made possible through the generous donation of 29 corneas by MD International Canada, PAM, and Dr. Naeem Khan & Family.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to APPNA for their invaluable facilitation and continuous support.
Such collaborative efforts bring light into the lives of patients suffering from corneal blindness and reaffirm our commitment to restoring vision and hope in our community.

Dear all,
It is with great pleasure to share with you that our corneal transplant team performed 29 corneal transplants yesterday, in a single day. Alhamdulillah.
I am extremely grateful to our senior colleagues and surgeons Dr, Sadiqullah, Dr Samina Karim, Dr Shahid Rauf, Dr. Noor, Dr Zia and Dr Arqam for performing and supervising this uphill task very efficiently and Professionally.
I am also very thankful to the highly competent and dedicated trainee's of our department including Dr Arsalan, Dr Mehdi, Dr. Nadeem, Dr Mohsin, Dr Farhan, Dr Huzaifa, Dr Saira and Dr. Niha their surgical Skills and eagerness to learn was a pleasure to watch. ( my apologies if I have forgotten any name)
Our supporting team in OT's, Ibrar khan, Jalal khan, Naib Ali, Amjad khan, Atlas khan and Farman khan and the nursing staff was a huge help without them achieving this milestone was not possible.
The support and backing of Professor Sanaullah Jan and Dr. Yousaf Jamal in facilitating this Mini Eye camp was of vital importance and a strength for us.
I am also highly thankful to the entire faculty who have always been very cooperative and have prioritized these corneal transplants on their own lists and patients.
I would also like to convey my heartfelt gratitude to the administration of HMC, Chairman BOG Professor Noor ul Iman, Dean KGMC Professor Shahzad Akbar , Medical director HMC Dr. Mushtaq Khattak and especially Hospital Director Dr. Gulzar Ahmad for the support they provided to us by arranging the consumables for these surgeries and the staff support who were available to us through out the day. Without the support of HMC authorities, executing this up hill task would not have been possible.

Glaucoma Awareness Week 2026 concluded with an Iftaar dinner held in the PICO lawn, attended by PICO students and faculty. Certificates and words of appreciation were presented to all participants, with special recognition for our students who made admirable efforts in successfully carrying out the activities during Glaucoma Awareness Week.
We extend our sincere thanks to Dr. Sadiqullah and Dr. Pervaiz Pervez Akhtar for their active participation and excellent arrangements. The occasion was also graced by Dr. Yousaf Jamal, Chairman of Ophthalmology at Hayatabad Medical Complex.

A Glaucoma Awareness Walk was held on 12th March 2026, starting from Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology (PICO) and concluding at the Administration Block of Hayatabad Medical Complex (HMC).
Prof. Noor ul Iman, Chairman BoG MTI-HMC, attended as the Chief Guest and led the awareness walk. The event was also graced by Prof. Mushtaq Khattak (Medical Director MTI-HMC), Dr. Gulzar Ahmad (Hospital Director MTI-HMC), Prof. Shehzad Akbar (Dean/CEO MTI-KGMC), Prof. Tahmeedullah (Director Burns & Plastic Surgery Center), and Dr. Yousaf Jamal (Chairperson Eye Department HMC).
Assistant Professors, Medical Officers, and Trainee Medical Officers from the Department of Ophthalmology, along with students from PICO, faculty members, and staff from various departments actively participated in the walk. Students carried banners and posters displaying glaucoma awareness messages and wore awareness jackets to highlight the importance of early detection and prevention.
At the conclusion of the walk, Prof. Sanaullah Jan, Director PICO, presented a shield to the honorable Chief Guest and expressed gratitude to all participants for their enthusiastic involvement in promoting glaucoma awareness.

A Painting Competition on the theme of Glaucoma was organized on 11th March 2026 at Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology (PICO) as part of World Glaucoma Week activities. Students from PICO and other medical institutions including Kabir Medical College, Rehman Medical College, Professional College of Medical Sciences, Institute of Health Sciences (IHS) KMU, and the University of Peshawar actively participated in the event.
The competition was judged by Mr. Arbab Hashim, a renowned artist, who served as the Chief Judge. The panel of judges also included Prof. Mushtaq Khattak (Hospital Director HMC), Prof. Muhammad Naeem Khan (Ex-Chairman Eye Department HMC), Prof. Tahmeedullah (Director Burns and Plastic Surgery HMC), and Prof. Nasir Saeed (Ex-Director PICO). Dr. Qazi Amjid from the Burns and Plastic Surgery Department, HMC, also participated in the event.
The program was hosted by Prof. Sanaullah Jan (Director PICO), Dr. Yousaf Jamal (Chairperson Eye Department HMC), along with the PICO faculty and staff. Students created live paintings highlighting different aspects and themes related to glaucoma awareness.
Prof. Liaqat Ali from IKD also showcased two beautiful oil paintings and personally attended the event to encourage the participating students. After careful evaluation by the judges, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd position winners were announced. The top three groups received certificates along with cash prizes, while all other participants were awarded certificates of participation.
At the conclusion of the event, Prof. Sanaullah Jan, Director PICO, presented shields to the honorable judges and expressed gratitude to everyone for their support and valuable contributions in making the event successful.

Pakistan Institute of Community Ophthalmology (PICO) celebrated World Glaucoma Week from March 9 to March 13, 2026. As part of the activities, a Glaucoma Symposium was held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
The event was honored by the presence of Prof. Muhammad Daud Khan as the Chief Guest. Prof. Zia Muhammad served as the Chairman of the session, while Dr. Gulzar Ahmad Khan and Prof. Shahzad Akbar Khan attended as Guests of Honor. Prof. Mahfooz Hussain contributed as the Co-Chair.
The symposium brought together professionals and participants to raise awareness about glaucoma and emphasize the importance of early detection and proper eye care.
