AI may soon move from assisting researchers to doing research itself. OpenAI has set an ambitious internal goal: an AI research “intern” by September 2026 and a fully automated AI researcher by March 2028 systems designed to carry out increasingly complex research tasks with far less human intervention. If achieved, this could dramatically accelerate scientific discovery, but it also raises profound questions about the future of researchers, jobs, creativity, verification, and human oversight. The 2028 target is an internal goal, not a guarantee, and OpenAI has acknowledged that it may fail to achieve it. Still, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the future of research may not simply be AI helping researchers it could be researchers working alongside AI systems capable of conducting substantial parts of the research process themselves. AI may be about to reshape the global economy on a scale that is difficult to imagine. Speaking at the recent G20 Innovation Ministerial Summit, Elon Musk estimated that AI could increase global economic output by 20–30% roughly $20–$30 trillion per year and argued that combining AI with humanoid robotics could potentially create even larger productivity gains. He also predicted that more than one billion humanoid robots could exist within a decade. These are Musk’s forecasts, not established facts, but they highlight the enormous economic expectations surrounding AI and robotics. At the same time, Musk warned that the coming AI boom could face a major electricity and power-supply challenge. The big question is no longer simply how powerful AI can become but how societies will manage its energy needs, jobs, regulation, and benefits as the technology scales. AI is moving fast, and Claude Fable 5.1 is another sign of just how quickly the field is evolving.
