**Othello by William Shakespeare**
The Moor of Venice is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 1603. It revolves around the themes of love, jealousy, betrayal, and racial prejudice.
Act I: The Seeds of Malice 🌱
The play begins in Venice. The villain, Iago, a bitter ensign, resents his general, Othello, a Moorish nobleman in the Venetian military service, for promoting the young Michael Cassio over him to be his lieutenant.
Iago manipulates the wealthy, lovesick Venetian gentleman Roderigo, who is infatuated with Desdemona, Othello's new wife. Iago and Roderigo wake up Brabantio, a Venetian senator and Desdemona's father, to inform him that his daughter has secretly married Othello.
Brabantio is outraged and accuses Othello of using witchcraft to win his daughter's affection. Othello successfully defends himself before the Duke of Venice and the senators, confirming that Desdemona married him out of genuine love, admiring his tales of adventure and danger. Othello is immediately ordered to Cyprus to command the Venetian forces against the imminent Turkish attack. Desdemona insists on accompanying him.
Act II: Arrival in Cyprus 🏰
Othello, Desdemona, Iago, Emilia (Iago's wife and Desdemona's attendant), Cassio, and Roderigo all arrive in Cyprus. The Turkish fleet is destroyed by a storm before the battle can begin, turning the mission into a celebration.
Iago begins his plot. He gets Cassio drunk and then provokes Roderigo to fight him. In the ensuing commotion, Othello is awakened and, seeing the disorder, dismisses Cassio from his lieutenancy.
Iago then advises Cassio to appeal to Desdemona, suggesting she can persuade Othello to reinstate him, thus using Desdemona's kindness as a tool in his scheme.
Act III: The Green-Eyed Monster 🐍

Bapsi Sidhwa’s _The Pakistani Bride_ (first published in 1981) is a stark, multi‑layered novel that follows the life of Zaitoon, a girl who becomes a symbol of the many women caught between the violent upheavals of Partition and the rigid patriarchal customs of Pakistan’s rural and urban societies. The story begins in 1947, when a young Zaitoon is ripped from her family during the chaotic train massacre that accompanied the division of India and Pakistan. A tribal man named Qasim, himself a refugee fleeing the same violence, rescues her from the wreckage and adopts her as his daughter. Their journey takes them first to the bustling streets of Lahore, where Qasim works as a guard and later becomes a modest businessman, and later to the stark, mountainous region of Kohistan, where Qasim’s ancestral tribe lives. The novel is divided into three major sections—childhood in the plains, adolescence in Lahore, and forced marriage in the mountains—each revealing a different facet of the oppression faced by women in Pakistan ¹ ².

In Lahore, Zaitoon grows up under the care of Qasim and the kindly couple Nikka and Miriam, who run a small household and provide her with a semblance of stability. She attends school briefly, learns to read, and begins to absorb the cultural norms of urban middle‑class life. However, the novel quickly makes clear that even in the city, women are still treated as property. When Qasim, nostalgic for his homeland and fearful of losing his cultural identity, decides that Zaitoon must marry a man from his own tribe, the decision is made without consulting her. The marriage is arranged when Zaitoon is only sixteen, and she is sent to the remote mountains to become the “Pakistani Bride” of Sakhi, a young man from Qasim’s clan ¹ ³.

The mountain segment of the novel is the darkest and most harrowing. Zaitoon arrives in a harsh, isolated community where tribal customs dictate absolute obedience to male authority.
