In 1958, the United States accidentally dropped a nuclear bomb on Mars Bluff, South Carolina. On March 11, a B-47 bomber was flying from Hunter Air Force Base in Georgia to England when it experienced an in-flight emergency. The crew was forced to jettison the bomb to prevent an explosion aboard the aircraft.

Although the bomb, which contained a nuclear core, did not detonate with a nuclear explosion, its conventional explosives caused a significant blast upon impact. The explosion created a large crater and caused substantial damage to property, injuring six people but fortunately causing no fatalities. The incident highlighted the dangers associated with the handling and transportation of nuclear weapons.
