Alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This community outreach program directly contributed to advancing several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
SDG 13: Climate Action (Target 13.3): This served as the primary driver of the event. By addressing young students, the session directly worked to improve education, awareness-raising, and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, and impact reduction.
SDG 4: Quality Education: By integrating technical presentations with competitive speech and quiz segments, the initiative provided inclusive, high-quality environmental education outside the standard textbook curriculum, building critical thinking skills.
SDG 15: Life on Land: The distribution of live plants to the winning students promoted hands-on biodiversity conservation, highlighting the immediate importance of afforestation and terrestrial ecosystem protection.
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals: The collaboration between higher education bodies (IEEE Sukkur Subsection & IEEE Education Society QUEST) and a grassroots institution(Brainstorming Grammar School Nawabshah) exemplifies the local partnerships required to drive sustainable development.
Event Activities:
Activity 1: Climate Change Causes & Remedies Awareness and Education Session
The core educational segment of the day featured an enlightened awareness session delivered by a panel of academic experts and student leaders. The speakers addressed the pressing challenges of global warming, regional climate impacts, and actionable remedies. Prof. Dr-Abdul Sattar Saand (Ambassador for Climate Change Education from QS Impact Organisation, Advisor for IEEE Education Society QUEST, and Chair of the IEEE Sukkur Subsection) opened the session. He emphasized the critical role of youth in environmental advocacy, detailed the global mechanisms driving climate change, and brought global insights from the QS Impact platform to urge students to adopt sustainable daily habits.
Dr. Muhammad Ali Bajarani provided context on regional environmental challenges, explaining how industrialization and deforestation directly impact regional weather patterns, temperature hikes, and agriculture in Sindh.
REHAN RASHEED MEMON σ±’ (Chair, IEEE Education Society QUEST Student Chapter) and Sameer Gilal (Student Member) presented interactive, student friendly remedies. They highlighted practical conservation techniques such as the "3 Rs" (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), water conservation, and the vital role of urban afforestation.
Activity 2: Student Speech Competition about Climate Change:
To encourage public speaking and critical thinking, a speech competition was held among the school students. Participants passionately expressed their views on the theme of climate change, articulating the urgency of protecting the planet. The students demonstrated an impressive understanding of environmental issues, articulating creative solutions ranging from community cleanups to reducing plastic consumption.
Activity 3: Climate Change Quiz Competition
An interactive quiz competition was conducted to assess and solidify the students' knowledge regarding environmental science. The questions covered the causes of greenhouse gas emissions, the importance of biodiversity, and global sustainability efforts. The competitive spirit ran high, showcasing the students' sharp analytical skills and retention of the facts discussed during the earlier awareness session.
