Remembering Jammu:

Jammu-Sialkot Railway line was 43KM long which was built in the 1890s.

If one were to start the journey from Sialkot, one would first stop at Suchetgarh then RS Pora. The next stop would be MiranSahib and finally one would reach Jammu Cantt.

The time to travel from both cities was about 90 mins. The people of Jammu had a great relationship with the people of Pakistan Punjab and especially with Sialkot.

A large number of people from Sialkot would visit Jammu every Sunday for a picnic at the historic Ranbir canal.

The people of Jammu visited Sialkot, a more modern city with localized industry.

The railway was deliberately neglected, with all signs of this railway line disappearing today. An important part of Jammu Muslims' history lost forever after the genocide.

The year 1931 emerged as revolutionary against Maharaja and his state officials. The issue of religious restrictions and insult of Holy Book, and oppression of Muslims by Dogra Dharam Raj became the basis of the revolution of & sacrifices in Kashmir.

During these protests, a young man Abdul Qadeer joined the protest and delivered an emotional speech.

Abdul Qadeer's speech was considered seditious against Maharaja, he was arrested & sent to Srinagar jail for prosecution.

It was on 13 July when during the trial a big crowd entered the jail tried to free him. In resistance, the Dogra forces opened the fire & killed 22 people.

J&K Muslims who later became known as Azad Kashmiris have always strongly wanted J&K to be part of Pakistan.

The accession with Pakistan Resolution that was passed on 19th July of 1947 and then later the creation of Homeland Pakistan on 14th August ... provided the basis to the Muslims of J&K to achieve their objectives by using all means necessary.

These aspirations and actions were similar to those of other states in the subcontinent, seeking to join dominion of choice.

To Allah we belong and to Allah we shall return.

In September 1947, the present writer happened to travel in a lorry on the Jammu-Srinagar road, from Batote to Srinagar.

The lorry was full of Sikh refugees from the Punjab, with bloodshot eyes, all armed with Kirpans.

Their leader, Amar Singh, formerly an SDO in the PWD and a refugee from Montgomery (now called Sahiwal) district, accommodated me near his seat, mistaking me in my western dress and felt hat as a Kashmiri Pandit. He made very alarming revelations during this journey.

On reaching the Banihal top, from where the entire Valley can be seen, spread out like the palm of a hand, he smiled grimly and said: "Pandit Jee! That day not far off when this Valley will be full of Sikhs and Pandits only, and the Muslmaans will either be killed or pushed into Pakistan."
