The World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) has launched “Cutting Rice Methane Emissions: Scalable Strategies for Business Action and Accountability,” a new guidance developed in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Anthesis Group, Ceres, and partners, with support from the Global Methane Hub.

Developed under WBCSD’s Rice Methane Action Alliance (RMA), the guidance offers science-based and practical strategies for businesses to reduce methane emissions from rice cultivation while advancing farmer support and sustainability goals. It helps companies navigate complex reporting frameworks, identify credible measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems, and implement effective mitigation measures.

The publication also highlights proven approaches such as alternate wetting and drying (AWD), residue and nutrient management, and efficient technologies, presented through a structured “Rice Action Plan” framework—Disclose, Plan, and Track—to help companies set baselines, monitor progress, and integrate emission reduction actions into broader climate transition plans for measurable and scalable impact.
