Occupational safety and health (OSH) is generally defined as the science of the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of hazards arising in or from the workplace that could impair the health and well-being of workers, taking into account the possible impact on the surrounding communities and the general environment. This domain is necessarily vast, encompassing a large
number of disciplines and numerous workplace and environmental hazards. A wide range of structures, skills, knowledge and analytical capacities are needed to coordinate and implement all of the “building blocks” that make up national OSH systems so that protection is extended to both workers and the environment.
The scope of occupational safety and health has evolved gradually and continuously in response to social, political, technological and economic changes. In recent years, globalization of the world’s economies and its repercussions have been perceived as the greatest force for change in the world of work, and consequently in the scope of occupational safety and health, in both positive and negative ways. Liberalization of world trade, rapid technological progress, significant developments in transport and communication, shifting patterns of employment, changes in work
organization practices, the different employment patterns of men and women, and the size, structure and life cycles of enterprises and of new technologies can all generate new types and patterns of hazards, exposures and risks.
Demographic changes and population movements, and the consequent pressures on the global environment, can also affect safety and health in the
world of work.

When the Monster Burned in its own Flames.
Piper Alpha is the biggest offshore Oil Disaster in the history of oil & gas affected 10 percent of U.K Oil production led to financial losses of 2 billion pound.
( Almost 5 billion US$ of today )
Late in the evening of 6 July 1988, a series of explosion traumatized the workers who had been present on the platform of Piper Alpha in North Sea, Aberdeen,Scotland.
When fire engulfed the platform the most of the top module collapsed in Sea resulting in 169 fatalities.
What went wrong ?
Piper Alpha has started operation in 1976. Because getting spectacular production out of it the Operator, Occidental, asked to increase production rates, they were granted permission on one condition that gas should also be exported instead of being flared to the purpose-built refinery on the island of Flotta in the Orkneys.
There were two modes of operations,
1. Phase 1 mode where excess gas were flared.
2. Phase 2 mode where gas was exported.
Before 3 days of the disaster, Piper Alpha was operating in phase 2 mode when the molecular sieves were taken out of service for maintenance and the Piper Alpha is reconfigured to operate in phase 1.
The Accident
At about 21.45 on 6 July 1988, condensate pump B tripped, Shortly afterwards, the gas alarms
Activated, the flare was observed much bigger than usual because of the tripping of a gas compressor led to an explosion ripped through Piper Alpha.
The men in control room were knocked off their feet and thrown to the floor because of the intensity of that explosion and most of the crew was off duty and were in at their accommodations and the explosion thrown them out of the bed according to the statement of Witnesses.
After a short while, a second flash and bang unleashed as a huge fireball roared into the night sky.
The structure of Piper Alpha lost its strength because of being engulfed in intense fire and the topside of it collapsed into the Sea. The accommodation block, were 81 men were present or
Sheltering slides in the depths of Sea. All of them were present inside died.
The fires from the well and oil & gas lines had produced flames of approximately 200 meters.
It took three weeks to extinguish the fire. Out of 226 people, only 61 were survived.
109 died due to inhalation of Smoke.
13 by drowning.
11 of injuries including burns.
The cause of death of 4 could not be established.
30 bodies were never recovered.
Many lessons can be learned by the miserable event that will never be forgotten in the history of Oil & gas or any hazardous industry and by studying the analytical reports, findings, the underlying, root causes we can learn a lot to establish a robust Health and Safety management System at workplaces to protect lives and financial losses.
Establishing, implementing and maintaining effective health and safety management system is an essential tool for organizational and financial growth.
It is better to stay Safe than Sorry.

Sometimes it’s hard to focus, to concentrate on what you want to do, to achieve Because of misdirected thoughts that make us wander in dark alley surrounded By the dark, dense clouds of utter confusion.
Most of the times, we have a desire to dive in an ocean to reach it’s depths to find The exuberance pearls to exchange them with some diamonds of peace and harmony but because of many factors we fail to establish, execute the plan and kept standing at the shore.
In such a busy life where most of us are surrounded by mental stress due to hectic routines, Financial, personal issues, it becomes hard for an individual to spare some time for him/herself To explore his/her inner self to get connected with his/her soul to revive his/her true self.
If we wouldn’t allocate a reasonable time to understand the needs of our internal being then the internal voids more likely to get deepen as the emptiness would get the chance to make its nest inside of those voids and started to dig it with the shovel of distress to develop a tunnel of fears and Trepidation.
Sometimes, it is better to sit under the moonlight to find the sunlight hiding, invisible to our Eyes but present somewhere inside of us,ready to enlighten our life.
Solitude, a condition, a phase not known to many isn’t less than a blessing as it gives us the Opportunity to compose our mind to streamline our thoughts to enhance our thinking
ability to empower us to handle, tackle daily life problems.
Live your life and let the positive energy enter your mind to lighten up all the dark spots not allowing you to see towards the aptitude you are gifted with.
A healthy attitude towards life paves a road to prosperity.
